Comments (8)The wood is Cherry and yes we designed the hood. We used a cabinetry company that buys the doors from Walzcraft- Shaker doors with a trim inside. He constructs all the cabinets in his shop. All the trim detail is possible because it was custom. The stain was Cherry Cinnamon. The island has the same shaker doors without the trim with Black paint and a black glaze on island. The knobs and pulls on the island as different from the main cabinetry....See More♥ Alaska White granite -- what wood+style for cabinetry?
Comments (47)My architect's thoughts make me feel "safe" going darker with the cabinetry. :) I'm leaning toward alder, in a rich dark stain matched to the darkest shade of wood in the floors (per my architect's suggestion), with a black glaze to desaturate the wood color. And rebunky, I wouldn't do skylights (for various reasons, the main being that the ceiling above the kitchen is going to be trusses + a metric ton of insulation) BUT that idea reminded me -- it's easy and relatively inexpensive to retrofit solar tubes, and those won't interfere with trusses or insulation! Comments (2)Have you refinished wood before? Since you mention “clueless,” I am going to assume you have not. Regular stain cannot be used on finished cabs; you will have to strip and sand to use the product you mentioned. This is a ton of work and MESSY! I believe the stain you posted needs to be used on bare wood....just took a quick look and did not read directions though. Gel stains can be used over already finished cabs, but a sealer will have to be used. The tricky thing with gel stains is getting a uniform application that does not look blotchy..multiple thin coats is the way to go. General Finishes makes a grey gel stain....See MoreWill wood cabinetry come back in style?
Comments (28)@D Walker - I was hoping that it was a real stone! I was worried that it wasn’t because it actually looks TOO PERFECT to be real! All the colors + dramatic pattern of the veining = WOW! Stunning. I‘ve never considered introducing green into my kitchen (it had teal in it back in 1996!) but if I saw a slab like this in person, it would be hard to pass up!...See MorePaul M.
