I have a large one and can't figure out what to pot it in or should I mount it. Its way too large and any pot or basket (which its in now) can barely support it. Canes are too long.
How are you growing yours? It appears they are mounted?
What do you do with them with the cold weather? Mine is way too big to bring inside.
I think that they like it 50 and above. So the big bloomers find a pass to get inside. I have big doors and a large glass top coffee table so it is easy to bring them in. When bloomers are brought in I get lots of smiles. Non bloomers are less welcome inside. That works because the bloomers are too big to fit in the heated greenhouse.
The small ones will mount on cork. They also do well potted. Mine get a terra cotta pot filled with red lava rock. The pot is in a hanging wood basket. They seem to defend themselves from dividing by weaving the canes together. They will make keikis.
If they grow over the pot and attach to the basket I do the basket in a basket trick like pot in a pot. As to not disturb the roots. One of them has 3 baskets now. I think there is one more size up then I'll see what is next...
They get morning sun and lots of water. When potting, they must be on top of the medium, not in it. Secured by rhizome clips.
Lows in the 50s are bad. I thought these needed 55-60 degree night minimums. Maybe I will give one of the smaller ones a try again. I have tried a couple of antelope types but I have not done terrible well. I thought it was my cool fall/winter temperatures. I guess some thing else was going on.
From what I read, the temps in tropical Queensland, where these plants come from, have absolute lows near 50. So that is what I do. My climate is desirable for the antelopes except the winters can go below their liking. Usually we have below 50 in November through March. But for the first time we did not go below 50 until a few days ago.
Harvey, mine has never been taken in and in Sarasota we've had temps to the 30's. Hasn't bothered it that I can tell. Mine is in bloom now and feeling guilty by your good gardening practice, I took it from under the tree and moved it to my lanai.
This was given to me 3 years ago from a grower in Miami. No tag. It is terribly ungainly and I'm about to try to find it a new home.
The longest can I could measure is about 4 feet. That is not counting the 2ft spikes.
I have tried pots, no luck, too top heavy. I finally put it in a basket but it is too top heavy and keeps falling out before it can root well enough to hold on.
Tried to take a few shots today but was so windy the plant was spinning in circles. But it gives you an idea about the problem I'm having.
