My fig leaves get brown on the edges & drop off, leaving leggy plants

I have 2 fig plants in central Florida in outdoor containers and 1 in the ground. The former are 2 years old, the latter 1 year old. I water them regularly (every few days during the summer heat if there's no rain). I use city water but let it sit in pails for 24 hours before use to let the chlorine evaporate. I give the plants a small amount of organic fertilizer in early and late spring and mid-summer. But the figs look very spindly with nice green leaves only at the tips of longish branches.
