I have a sun/shade problem in a back bed behind the garage. There's full sun from leaf drop in fall through leaf out in mid-spring. Just found out bulbs I planted there in last fall's sun have to be moved because now they're in full shade and won't get sun to regenerate bulbs. Have same worry about putting any "shade perennials" out there including ferns because of sunny condition from Nov. through May. I've already got 4 Foxglove and 3 Lamium "Purple Dragon" to put back there and looking at varieties of Heuchera, Japanese Painted Fern and other perennials for shade figuring by the time they restart growth in spring they'll get enough shade by mid-spring not to get washed out or burned. Planning to supplement all that foliage with shade annuals for some added form, color and blooms. I've got common variety of six dormant ferns sitting in the refrigerator hydrator waiting to be planted and don't think any of them can be planted in this spring/summer shade bed because of fall/early spring bright sun. Don't know which forum is best to pose question of what to plant in garden with lots of afternoon sun Fall through mid-spring and full shade with nearby tree "leaf out through leaf drop"! Two inconsistent light conditions for most plants. This particular bed faces West and is only 22' long by 3' deep between garage wall and back sidewalk so I can't go with anything too large for shade. Hopefully I'll figure out a balance of a few midsize things with smaller things to weave around them and vary/compliment color, foliage and form. I lusted after a dwarf azalea but doubted that would blend with proportion/form of other plantings in that small space. I really want this bed to look balanced but plant selection is proving to be a challenge for this totally novice gardener.

I'm more in the import business. I go around to local frog hangouts, and catch one every spring. Of the 5 caught, 3 have made my pond permant residence. I see no need for more. Although the way they croak at night I could be wrong...

OITGAD, maybe I can help you with the insertion of pictures. At least I'll try. First you have to upload your pictures to a host site like photobucket or picturetrail. It's really easy to do and when you get them uploaded, photobucket is the easiest, look at your picture and below it will be 3 lines of text. The middle one is the url. Highlight the URL and right click and copy. Come back to the forum and when you have your message typed just right click and paste the URL into the photo. *This is with Photobucket*. If you choose to use another web host then after you upload your picture you will have to right click on the picture and then click properties, copy the URL and then go back to your message and type [img src=this is where you right click and put your URL] where I have put the [ and ] you will need to change those to and that's it. Hit preview and submit. There is a test forum for pictures that you may want to try it in before you use the regular forum and people there who will help you to tell you what you're doing wrong if you have a problem. Mr. Breeze, give it light, light, and more light. I put it under HP light (but gradually, as the thin leaves burn), and within 2-3 weeks a spike formed. It's got a huge scale problem, but I want to wait til the blooms fade (which won't be long) before I kill the blasted critters. I also want to take another photo, as the colour is not correct. (Poor lighting and new camera ). I think it is a wardii, like Sharon 's. It was just listed 'species' Stan. on the label. Snowpea, I went to the Montreal Orchid Show too!
