Need suggestions for tweaking 511 for watermelons
Comments (3)Ed: I suspect the canteloupes grew a little faster than the watermelons and could have "hogged" the nutrients and space before the watermelons could establish themselves. I grew four tiger baby watermelons in a half whiskey barrel (25 gallons) and got about two nice sized melons per plant. I suspect they were over crowded as well, but it's so hard to limit the number of plants when you have so little space. I am no expert, but from my research, I believe melons prefer soil that is close to neutral pH, 6.5-7. I'd be careful about adding more peat....See Moremelons & white fleshed watermelons for kids garden FL
Comments (0)Hi, We were hoping we could get some suggestions on easy to grow melons for kids' garden as well as white fleshed watermelon. There are several choices out there so it's hard to narrow it down & since we're new at this we need some suggestions. We're in Florida, Space Coast/Central Florida so I've posted a similar message on the Fl gardening forum as well. Our family eat lots of melons, orange flesh (cantaloupes which we now have read are called muskmelons & honeydews, watermelons). We are looking for small to medium sized melons that might do well in our area & are tasty & easy to grow, we don't want the kids (nor us new to gardening parents) to get discouraged or frustrated. Thanks everyone for the info!...See Moremelons, watermelons doing well
Comments (78)I hope you've seen some fruit by now, gardenerlady! From what I've heard, it's normal to see only one kind of flower (male) on melons and cucumbers early in the season. I wouldn't call Mid-July "early", though...was the weather too cool, maybe? I haven't been gardening for very many years, but I've always noticed that cucurbits produce male flowers for what seems like weeks (it really isn't) before they finally start producing female flowers. It goes along like tht just enough to make me god and worried, and then it resolves itself. This has been an interesting thread to backread; I'm growing some Prescott Fond Blancs myself, and two melons did slip from the vine sort of early. They're nice enough, decently sweet, but nothing to write home about. Then I read the observations on overwatering, and thought "Oh." It's been very hot here, and some of their leaves got toasted on the vine, so I was watering them a lot, just soaking them. Maybe I'll cut back on the water a bit and see if my future melons are sweeter. They have a wonderful scent, though! It's sweet and spicy, sort of like melon and sort of like cedar wood....See MoreNeed suggestions with melon variety
Comments (1)You might try Charentais, I dont know about how much time before they ripen but they are very good. My other favorite are Crenshaw melons. We are in Fresno where it gets a bit warmer....See Moregalinas
