Has anybody has this surgery and what was the result?

I have known two people who had surgery for brain tumors, and both lived well afterwards. What I did learn is that doctors and hospitals specialize in the types of tumors/surgeries. I overheard these two talking and learned that Stanford did one type and UCSF did another. So be sure that the doctor has done lots of surgeries for this type of tumor, and not just one or two. Be sure to get a second opinion, or 3 or 4.

There are too many types of brain tumors and they occur in too many different parts of the skull and upper neck to even guess. Talk to your doctor and/or research the type of tumor, where it is located, and type of surgery. Types of surgery could go through the skull, up the nose, in through the ears, or through the back of the mouth.

Previous post is correct. While the thought of surgery for a brain tumor is scary, the good news is it must be a type and location that surgery is an option for. For some, surgery is not even an option, radiation and chemotherapy are the only possible treatments. The following is a good basic resource. Suggest doing some reading, writing down questions to ask the doc.

I called and at least got them to move the appt. from the 26th to the 14th. I guess if you not dying, then there is no big rush. I know I should be relieved, but I just want to know what is going on. I got the results in an email and it was not normal, but the explanation was medical gibberish to me. I did lots of web searches but it more confusing than helpful. I need the doctor to explain it. I want to move on with my life and not have this hanging over my head. Clare

Carol, Sending prayers, well wishes and support your way!! In 2008, I went through 6 months of chemo (11 treatments) and 6 weeks of radiation. Chemo varies depending on what drugs you're on and also from person to person so you may need to just wait and see how you feel. I had very little nausea, but on the rare occasion that I did, the anti-nausea drugs worked great. I've always battled my weight and happily lost 10 lbs during chemo, but have put on about 40 since!! I had problems with proteins not tasting good (especially beef products) and pretty much lived on fruit smoothies with protein powder added. Some people regain their appetite for things they couldn't eat during treatment and some people don't. Your attitude sounds great and will carry you a long way during your treatment -- keep up the good work and remember that every year, more and more people are surviving cancer. I never imagined that I'd be diagnosed at 45, but I never once thought of it as a death sentence...I just knew I could beat it. Keep us posted and remember that we're here when you need us. Janet

I haven't scheduled the surgery yet, but I just had the other tests. According to the MRI, etc., they suspect that a left temporal low-grade neoplasm is a glioma tumor. There are a lot of other information in the report, but they don't mean anything to me, you need to need a physician to interpret it. According to one nurse at the doctor's office, they have to check the tumor to see if it is benign or malignant. I was hoping they would be able to check it without opening the brain...sigh

I strongly encourage you to follow sushipup's advice, get at least a 2nd opinion if not a 3rd or 4th. Go to the largest, university affiliated, teaching medical center you can get to. While the US News ratings are not perfect, they are a decent place to start for someone lacking other sources of info. New treatments are often available at teaching hospitals, years before they are routine at small community hospitals.

I had the biopsy on Jan 6 and went the next home. Everything very well and I will get the results of the tumor in two weeks.

Glad to hear that surgery went well and you where able to go home the next day. Prayers are with you, along with good thoughts that the biopsy results will be good news. Please keep us posted, if you can.
