may night salvia

here it is the end of the first week of december and my may night salvia is looking absolutely beautiful

here's my question: do i just let it bloom and let the frost (if and when it comes) get it, do i cover it? will it come back after frost? it looked just ok in early spring and summer then it disappeared, i thought i was dead, then in sept, it started coming back and now it's blooming like crazy.... now what??

Wow, congratulations on getting fresh blooms this time of the year! I've never grown that variety of salvia, but I drool when I see pictures of them growing well in northern climates so I imagine they will survive the winter without covering and bloom again in the spring. That's just my guess. Anybody else?

It takes a lot of energy for a plant to bloom and if it was just recently planted it's probably putting it's energy into grow new roots. Think the sleep, creep, leap rule whenver you plant perennials. The first year the plant appears to sleep as it's busy getting established under ground, the next year growth appears to creep and the third year it leaps.

I have about 6 in front now. I purchased three new ones and plant in one area in the front. I had three in back that I moved and planted with the new three. This was in early summer probably. The new 3 did great last year where as the 3 I moved from the back yard just looked okay. They laid flatter on the ground and the flowers shot out in all directions (when they flowered finally). I moved them all AGAIN in the fall where they are today. They all look wonderful now and I even have seedlings springing up in the various places these plants had traveled to in the yard last year. Love it! So.... my inclination would be that they'll bloom next year if they don't this year. Sometimes splitting and transplanting can hinder blooming for a season.

you can not beat back the genetics of plant growth.. in hopes of making a smaller plant of it ... i am of the opinion.. that given a halfway decent soil .. and note i am on glacial beach sand ... that no plant EVER needs feeding ... they can fend for themselves very well.. thank you ... and i think you are starting to understand that.. with your insight into what hyperfertilizing MIGHT be doing to your plant ... just keep in mind.. they are not children.. that need to be fed.. clothed.. sent to school ... they are plants .. and all they really need is water .. and they can do most of the rest thru photosynthesis ... either move it.. where it has the space it needs... or simply get rid of it... life is simply too short.. to get a hate on for some plant that is not cooperating with your master plan ... find some friend who will take it.. and be done with it ... ken ps: i learned thru experimenting... cut half the plant back.. leave the other half.. and report back to us.. how the experiment works out ... or divide it.. stressing the heck out of it.. and see how it responds ... etc ... there really no true path.. when you have the shovel and the pruners.. lol ...
