problem playing cd's on my tower

I can listen to the music from my cloud Amazon etc but when I put a CD in my tower it doesn't play. I know this must be some simple solution but I'm depending on the forum to help. Thanks!

There may not be a simple solution. It could be a number of things, including mechanical failure. I assume you have tried more than one music CD...correct? Do you here any normal spinning sounds when you first load a disc? If you go into Windows Explorer, what is the description for the disc in that drive? Have you gone into Device Manager to see if there are any yellow warning flags for that drive?

Hold on before checking settings.

What PROGRAM have you tried to play the CD with? Windows Media Player, Itunes, or ? Start one of those, aim it toward the CD. Then what happens?

It's not always the case that inserting a CD starts a program to play it. Sometimes there's an association to do that, and sometimes that gets changed inadvertantly.

Don't know what I was searching but I landed on this webpage showing me how to change my default image viewer from Windows Picture and Fax Viewer to my choice. I like to use Picasa so I choose to follow the steps which seemed to work. Unfortunately the same thing happens, I have to go into My Computer and click on the folder with the pictures on it. I've still got the same question going through my mind.....why doesn't Picasa (or WPF) automatically open up and play the CD when I insert it in the CD drive? hi Caroline1947, I am sorry that you didn't understand. Is the computer under warranty? If it is, please call your manufacturer, they will be able to walk you through the steps. I found an old post about the same topic. As far as the cables go, the interior of your computer case is filled with cables that connect each device to the power supply and the motherboard. As only leaving Win98 18 months ago, kicking and screaming I admit, my position is it shouldn't matter R vs RW. I would recommend that she open My Computer and see if the drive is recognizing the disk. Unless you named the disk it should read as a series of numbers rather than the drive letter identifier. If the disk is recognized have her double click on it, or right click and select open on the appearing drop down menu. I do have one other thought. Your WMP version may be so more ahead than hers, she might not have the technical ability to open the files. You might have to redo the disk with perhaps Irfanview and ask her to install it on her system too. Irfanview worked fine on my old Win98 and still does on the one out in the garage. Plus, to avoid the possiblity use a CD-R if you do. DA

Does the Drive Show up in Windows Explorer? If not there is a Registry fix I can Post. I haven't seen it for a while, but I called it the Disappearing CD/DVD ROM. If the Drive DOES Show up in Windows Explorer, it may be one of the things Kudzu9 or Snidely posted.

All I did was click WINDOWS MEDIA PLAYER on my Programs and my Buddy Holly CD IS PLAYING.Wow! Thank you! I don't have Windows Explorer on my list.

Windows Explorer is sometimes referred to as My Computer, File Explorer, Computer, etc... It's just a was to check on the Drives, Folders, Files, etc... that are in your computer. It may look something like the Picture below (this is Windows 10 File Explorer):

I am fortunate to have a wonderful computer guy in Fairfield PA that I call on for assistance , house call , or cleaning etc. Otherwise I depend on Computer Help Forum. They always are helpful too.

I'm glad I was able to help. It's always good to start slowly with
problem solving steps. Exploration of registry entries or dealing with the
Device Manager are tasks that the average user should NEVER need to do.

especially glad I was able to help you listen to Buddy Holly. I was a
little kid when he was popular (and then tragically killed) but I love
his songs and like you, I still listen to him with some regularity.

My suggestion was just something else easy to Check. Making sure the CD/DVD ROM showed up in Windows Explorer! I wasn't really suggesting a Editing the Registry unless the CD/DVD ROM was missing. It was a pretty big problem in Windows XP and Vista. I haven't really heard of it being a problem in Windows 7, 8, 8.1 or 10, but that doesn't mean that it's not a problem.

I will agree with you Snidely when you say to check the easiest things first. You and Kudzu9 had already given a few good places to start! I'm glad it was an easy fix like Clicking Play on Windows Media Player! Great job Snidely!
