What is your favorite kitchen "must-have"?
Comments (33)Hi Asovey, How great that you're at the beginning of the process--it's a blast! Top of my list is an open, light, bright workspace that's beautiful--a place where I love to spend time and can easily work. Under this category fall an excellent KD and cabinetmaker, great lighting, natural light, and in my case white cabinets and white marble counters (personal taste...) Second is an excellent, quiet vent hood (I have the 54" Best by Broan with inline attic-mounter blower). I tore out an entire section of perfectly good kitchen in order to be able to install this with the custom wood hood around it. Third would be drawers, drawers, drawers. Deep pot drawers, plenty of drawers for utensils and wraps, etc. They're the best thing since sliced bread...literally :) ...in the kitchen. Fourth is a spacious, well-lit, easily accessible pantry. Fifth is pull-out sink faucets and a veggie sink in the island or main prep area. I love my new higher-end appliances, but I was pretty much just as happy with my Kenmore rangetop as I am with the new Wolf range, my Viking fridge is nothing to write home about--the previous Jenn-Air was just as good and quieter, and although I love my Miele DW, it's had so many problems that it was replaced by the company after 16 months. Never had a problem with the previous Kenmore. My point is that in my case and IMHO, form, storage space, layout, construction quality, and lighting are more important than my appliances. Have to agree with the 48" Wolf in the island being a potential problem. Your island would have to be massive to accommodate the range and still leave room for landing space and everything else that goes on around an island, that space could easily lose the intimate feel. I also hear people with in-island ranges complaining about splattering guests and family members while cooking, and always having a big mess in the main gathering area. It looks great for cooking shows, but ask around and see if people with that arrangement like it IRL. Personal choice, of course. Good luck, and enjoy the process!!...See MoreWhat's your favorite yellow in the kitchen?
Comments (29)I had a color consultant help me (I'm painting 11+ rooms and hallways and I wanted saturated colors in a hurry). She helped me narrow it down to 2 to 4 colors per room. We went thru many BM yellows and ended with 2155-50 Suntan Yellow (a bit orangy) and HC-4 Hawthorne Yellow. She told me to try it in a few places on the walls (2' x 3') and feather the edges. After a few weeks we're going with hawthorne yellow - painting on Tues. (we have medium cherry cabinets, typhoon bordeaux granite, red range and natural oak floors). Red in the dining room (4 variatons still on the wall), lilac in the sitting room (samples go up tomorrow), green and yellow in the office - you can view all these rooms while standing in one room. I have a dark blue for a half bath and haven't decided on a few other rooms....See MoreWeek 138 - What's your favorite kitchen memory?
Comments (22)I remember how sound didn't echo after my mom put shag carpet in the kitchen. We didn't realize sound echoed off the chic metal cabinets beforehand! I remember in college, my sister and I having horrible hangovers. Yup. Hangovers. She was lying on the kitchen floor, hamming it up, moaning. My mother was scolding us, trying not to laugh. My sis combed her hair out wildly the floor, and for some reason, stuck black olives in her nose. I stood over her and took a picture. We were laughing so hard we couldn't even talk. Months later, my very photogenic sister sent me a copy of that picture. Even with black olives in her nose, hung over with mascara circles under her eyes, she was gorgeous. I remember cooking a lot of brownies. My mom making Chicken a la orange. Vegetable soup for the 1st time, using my grandma's canned tomatoes. We'd always wondered what to do with those she gave us, and they were definitely a vegetable soup game changer. My dad making us breakfast every morning and dunking toast in coffee with cream. Him always having peanut M&Ms and orange juice in the fridge when I came home from school. Him trying to make me eat tuna casserole. He'd never try that foolishness again. My mom paying me to eat broccoli. Not enough money in the entire universe for that. Making meatloaf when my mom went back to school. I remember being at the table for a meal. Maybe Sunday, I don't know. Something happened on the TV and we all went into the family room to look. When we returned to the table, there, on the roast, stood our poodle, Tappy. Tappy started eating faster when she saw us. We were probably standing there with jaws dropped. I do remember us laughing so hard we couldn't talk. We did that a lot. What I don't remember, is learning how to cook....See MoreDIY Kitchen Cabinets - what's your favorite budget brand?
Comments (41)FWIW we did our own kitchen remodel and used Ikea (Side Note: They do ship and the price can be reasonable depending on where you live!). We didn't want to spend a lot and we only needed to purchase 3 base, and 1 wall cabinets. I was weary of the quality but we are very handy and took steps to further strengthen and reinforce them, especially when building our custom island with them! The two biggest things we did to strengthen them was we (#1) constructed our own cabinet feet out of lumber and (#2) reinforced the back wall of the cabinet (it comes with thin/flimsy MDF type material) with thin plywood (we did this for the island only because the back side would be exposed, so we used cheap plywood to backfill the gap and then nice plywood for the finish). My 2 favorite cabinets from them is the 36" wide (two huge drawers!) where I keep all of my pots and pans, and more! I currently have several stainless pots and pans, a large heavy copper sauce pot, and a cast iron wok in the top drawer and in the bottom drawer I have a set of 3 pampered chef rectangle stoneware baking dishes, 3 Ikea ceramic baking dishes, and a couple more big stainless soup pots, plus all the lids to my pots and pans. I may be pushing its limits but after two years I'm still really happy with them. I may eventually reinforce the floor of these because I do have a LOT of weight on them and they're really long drawers. I also love the wall cabinet that actually sits on top of the counters. It has two glass doors where we keep glassware and plates, and two skinny/long drawers on the bottom where we keep our silverware. It gives a custom feel without the custom price. Really neat piece and everyone comments on it! Having said all of that, we know this isn't our "forever" home. We don't have kids, and take care of our things. Within the next 3-5 years we are looking to (potentially) build a custom home that will hopefully be our forever home (if not, at least long term) and we will not be using Ikea. Simply because I'm not sure how they'll hold up over time. I've only heard at how some renters can really trash a place so I'd be really weary of Ikea for your situation. Maaaaaybe consider it only if you're willing to do some extra work to reinforce their weak points. But even then, after watching my two brothers grow up, I'm not sure Ikea would've survived in my parent's house. I'm a bargain shopper, and you'd be surprised what comes up for sale on Craigslist and Facebook marketplace. Also (if you have the time) check out your local Habitat for Humanity ReStore (and the like). We used to live in a high cost of living area and we'd always find high quality antique furniture, grand fireplace surrounds, marble tops, and yes, nice cabinets! Of course it's always timing game. Have to be in the right place at the right time, but it might just be worth a call or a stop. If I were going to have a rental I'd probably start by looking at these places first....See Morejunco East Georgia zone 8a
