I'm very interested in hearing folks' ideas because I am going to be working on a similar wall at my folks place where I will be moving in a couple of months. I want to do a wall of mom's prints and pictures and other art pieces from Japan, but I too don't know how to finesse it so it "works" and isn't just a mish mash. I've been googling instructions and a couple of things I have gleaned is that it helps to have some elements to tie the pictures together, like similar frames or a color theme, etc. Also to lay out on the floor ahead of time. One element I'm struggling with is how to know if it covers too much of an area, and how it relates to the other elements in the room. I too don't want it to overpower everything on the one hand if the room is sparse, but I could easily see filling up the room with her wonderful things to balance it out too. One possible way to do it is just collect a set of pictures that are similar to your room/bedroom and that you like and try to create something similar that evokes the aesthetic of the inspiration photo.

This is sort of related to the issue of a "layered" room as opposed to a very sparse one. Jackson Pollock type art seems to favor a very sparse modern type of decor where the colors and forms are the statements. But what do I know, lol! My mom's and my taste is more of a "cabinet of curiosities" type of aesthetic, although I am very careful about editing it down. My dad is just a complete mish mash, with no thought to how anything relates to anything else. He just wants everything out in the open where he can see it, clutter, clutter, clutter. That makes me crazy and is very mentally disturbing. The bedroom is the LAST place I would want something like that!

Our pictures have me wearing a magenta sweater and a grassy backdrop so it would be a nice pop of color for our room. I would imagine black frames would be less expensive than canvas would. Putting all my thoughts together is the challenge.

I don't know if I have a "style" per say. I guess I see stuff I like and I say "I like that." I don't really know what category I fit into.

The wall looks unfinished to me right now and the cages are very distracting. Could you get a long console table or a pair of shorter ones to put over the cages? (Even if the cages stick out from under the table, that's ok.) That way it would give you a visual break between what's above and what's below. It will also give you an opportunity to add some light to the wall with lamps which will help highlight the art. Currently the wall is shaded by the light being blocked by the tray ceiling. If you could do that, then it would help define the space better to which you can then add the art.

Photo canvases wrapped around frames would probably give you the best value. Whatever you put on that wall is likely to dominate the room because that is where your eye goes when you enter the room. If it were my house, I would get the largest photo canvases available and start with those. Start collecting the things you want on the wall, then lay them out on the floor, take a photo, and we can help you with organizing them.

Your room is very nice. But I think to fill that wall with art/photos, you're either going to have to have very large pieces or many of them. It's not possible to tell from the one view, but the first thing I thought when I saw your pic is that I would move the head of the bed over to that wall. I am assuming there is a window on the other side of the bed to match the one we see? If so, then that wall between them is much smaller for hanging art. It also might be possible to partially block the view of the dog crates if they are behind the bed when entering the room (or could they go on the wall the door is on, so they aren't so prominent from the door view?) Placing art above the dog crates is going to look odd and unfinished to me.

I thought the same thing as Olychick. Move the bed if space allows for a more favorable space on the wall between the windows, plus you can work on the windows as well. Can you buy one of those dog crates that doubles as a table?

I would definitely move the bed to that long wall. There's nothing wrong with having the dog crates in the room, they just shouldn't be in a place where they're the first thing you see when you walk into the room,

Your bed frame and bench at the foot of the bed are very nice. One thing you might want to think about is switching to a set of solid colored bedding, since from a distance, the bedding print and the paintings are fighting for attention. If the pictures you plan to hang have magenta accents, then perhaps a magenta duvet, comforter, or even throw, would help everything to sing together.

I like the idea of the console table over the dog crates with artwork and lamps above. This one is a nice concept: Dog crate under skirted table

It's better than my first photo search on Pinterest, which only yielded this, LOL.

You could scour Craigslist to find a thinner armoire or somthing tall and then you could simply work around that to fill the wall. My room is very similarly laid out like yours. I haven't touched the big blank wall yet. It is very overwhelming to figure out just what to do with it at this point. We just finished building and moved in and i am trying to slowly find pieces I like and can afford at the time. Which means time and patience is my answer to the problem.

I wonder if you can put a counter/console over the doggie crates.
