If you have these soapstone varieties......
Comments (20)I have Green Mountain Original PA. I find maintenance to be a piece of cake. But perhaps that's because this is the first time I've ever had a natural stone countertop in my kitchen. Honestly, I had read so much here about care and maintenance of various kinds of stone, including soapstone, that I was mentally prepared to do a heck of a lot more work than I've been actually been doing! At this point, my care and maintenance routine involves not carelessly banging sharp and heavy objects on my countertops and oiling the surfaces about once every month or so. (Keep in mind, however, that I'm a single empty nester. I imagine that my mileage might vary considerably with that of a large family with young children.) From your description, Debsan, I think my stone may act like yours. I had been wondering whether the appearance of white spots in some areas between oiling had anything to do with an uneven sanding process. I'm now experimenting with seeing how long I can go without oiling it all just to get some sense of what it would look and feel like to keep the stone in its "natural", unoiled state on a regular basis. BTW, my stone doesn't get water spots or rings and it doesn't scratch just by my moving a heavy object across it. The few incidental scratches I have given it go away with oiling. Overall, I am very happy with it....See Morehoned or matte countertop suggestions
Comments (7)Why thanks Angie!! Here's a pic of it brand new and oiled: And here's one I just took to show you it unoiled and after a year of major abuse. I probably haven't oiled it in a month or so and I can guarantee you I an a very frequent cook/baker who puts screaming hot pans directly on the soapstone. We love it both ways and every way in between. I usually oil it when we're having people over and I marvel at the sea glass colored inclusions. They pop more when waxed. Then as it fades I start thinking... no... I like it this way best. When faded awhile, the green isn't as vibrant but all these mica like inclusions glimmer. It reminds me of an old pair of faded stonewashed jeans. It is such an amazing counter surface. ESPECIALLY, for someone like me who does not approach cooking tasks delicately....See Morematte black counter help
Comments (15)nomorebluekitchen, are those porcelain (or ceramic) tiles that showed the lemon juice damage for you or tiles made of some kind of stone? I just noticed a (whitish) ring on the Galaxy soapstone sample we have from M.Tex on which I left the dishsoap (plastic) bottle overnight. I imagine the mark would disappear with oiling but I don't think I'd have to worry about a soap ring on ceramic or porcelain tile. But correct me if I'm wrong....See MoreSoapstone on perimeter and Nordic Black leathered on island?
Comments (22)AJ I'm guessing you are in New Hampshire. Take a look at The Soapstone Works located on Lee, NH. My brother recently remodeled his kitchen and used them for a ss perimeter and a wood (maple, I think) island. My brother built their cabinets out of oak. The island is painted. The whole look came together nicely. I understand your DH doesn't want a painted island. My brother didn't want this either...hates to paint over perfectly good wood, but went along with my SIL. Maybe you could convince him. Their island is finished with Waterlox. I love the feel and warmth the wood gives. They entertain alot and thus far are very happy with it holding up. Good luck!
