silver problem and new (to me) solution
Comments (25)Good quality silver isn't supposed to keep looking like brand new mirror like chrome" And that's why the electrolytic method is wrong. Besides if you do it always over the years, your silver will develop a cloudy look which I believe is a small amount of aluminum oxide on the surface....but a good polishing with some real polish removes it. And I have some pieces of plated silver that are about 160 years old....that have not worn away to base metal. They are old Sheffield plate and made from a sheet of copper and one of pure silver rolled together. I also have some pieces of other plated ware dating back more than 100 years that are showing no wear. And sterling silver is the same through out....so while perhape some may wear away it's not a huge factor. But I do have an old serving spoon...by the maker's mark it was made in New Orleans about 1840....and it is so worn at the bowl you know it has stirred a pot of cereal or pudding for a lot of years! Comments (101)Up until 12 years ago I worked in the food service industry, so I have lots of silver plate flatware. Once I was in the upper closet of a Sheraton where I worked and found boxes of Oneida Silver Plated Hotel Flatware, asked the GM about it, and he said take it,it was enough for 100 place settings! I have other boxes of sets of 12 or 24 settings that were given to me by GM's when cleaning out closets. I like the hotel silverplate, it's heavy and the knife handles are solid. The spoons get a tad yellow and I just wipe with Wrights Silver Polish. That's is my everyday stuff. As for cleaning in the dishwasher, thinking back I would have to say it takes about 30 years or so to toss the silverplated flatware washed in a dishwasher. Have to admit I am anal about the baskets in the dishwasher, being trained to put the knife blades down so not to poke yourself getting out, separate the spoons, forks and serving and utility in separate baskets. The Sterling set, I hand wash, it's sentimental. When I was a very young girl our family had a contract for vending machine sandwiches. On the bread bags there was a coupon on the side to cut out and redeem for sterling flatware. They would save all the bags for when my Grammie came to visit in the summer and she and I would sit and cut out the coupons. I still remeber bead crumbs and plastic sticking to me, lol. I would have to look but I think we cut enough coupons for a set for 24. Sterling doesn't tarnish as fast as plated, I keep mine is a chest with silver cloth, takes no time at all to shine up. Linda, I think the set you have is the same as what my Mom had, sure looks like it from the pic. I wish my cutlery was as wide as yours....See MoreSilver Polish + Silver Chests
Comments (5)I am "lucky" enough to have 3 sets for 12 plus a luncheon set, and I use them for everyday and have found that the Connoisseur Silver Wipes, sold at Bed, Bath and Beyond are great. Riverrat turned me to those and when I get down to 3 sheets, I go for a new box. Just wet the silver and wipe/rub and the tarnish is gone. I also was buying the Hagerty silver dip at BB&B but they no longer carry it. Wrights is fast but the silver seems to tarnish much faster than with Hagerty. You can buy the silver cloth at the fabric store and line a drawer or flatware tray and it really does help. Keep it "cacooned". Also, made by Hagerty are silver strips, long narrow strips of a treated paper that you can place in the drawer to prevent tarnish. Great for larger items placed in a zip bag, like a coffee pot or tray. Never, ever put the silver in the dishwasher mixed with your stainless. You can dishwasher it, but they cannot touch or you will have black tarnish like marks. But most importantly, use your silver when ever you can....See MoreSilver-plate in the dishwasher?
Comments (26)I purchased a jar of clear liquid, Goddards (est. 1839) silver dip and smells like the old hair perm solution. It does a quick job but turns plate almost yellow. Great for jewelry and sterling silver....See MoreRelated Professionals
