Woo hoo! Turkey FrameSoup -- Finally a Success!

I have tried all my life to make turkey frame soup as good as my mother's and never succeeded. This year I remembered a friend had given me her old copy of the cookbook my mother used, the only cookbook she used--The Settlement House Cookbook: The Way to a Man's Heart.

The recipe said to add the gravy and drippings and anything turkey. I had never added the left over gravy, and since this was a fresh turkey, I had about a quart of extra drippings. So I saved them all, including the uncooked neck. This morning I started simmering all the bones, the raw neck, drippings and gravy with all the bones. We never have any stuffing left, but the directions said to throw left over stuffing into the pot too. After 4 1/2 hours, I strained it, added an onion and the rest of the celery left over from making the stuffing, and simmered it about an hour without the lid to concentrate the broth. Added salt, pepper, egg noodles, parsley and the meat picked from the bones. DELICIOUS! And I have enough to freeze a quart or two for later.

The Settlement Cookbook is what my mom used as well - & I still use an ancient, tattered copy - such a classic!

I've got a big pot of turkey remains on to simmer, too. Turkey soup is a must!

Hi Mnkitty! Sam Kedem is from Israel. I asked him one time and he made me guess. I grow Reine des Violettes and Tradescant, among others. I don't do the Minnesota tip on any of them. Professor Roush is right--whether you bother with it or not depends on how much of the rose you want to survive. Most of the once-bloomers are quite hardy and don't need tipping anyway in our zone. I dump some leaves around the base of each one in fall if I get around to it. Austin roses, Bucks, HTs and Floribundas need a little more mulching to protect as much cane as possible. Don't remove the mulch until late April or so, when the leaves start to come out. Using fall leaves to mulch is easier than the Minnesota Tip but your roses stay shorter. Purple roses--I grow the Gallica 'Ombree Parfaite' and the HP 'Reine des Violettes' and they both do fine. 'Ombree Parfaite' makes a really attractive leafy shrub. I got mine from Pickering in Canada. I used to have the Floribunda 'Ebb Tide' and liked it a lot. It needs a good blanket of mulch/leaves, though, to make it through the winter. I gave it to a friend who loves purple roses, and she didn't protect it, so it died. Of course the hardiest, most fragrant and easiest roses for Minnesotans are the Rugosas. I have a lot of them, but no purple ones; I have Roseraie de l'Hay, which is sort of a crimson-purple, and wonderfully fragrant. There is also one called Purple Pavement you might check out (I don't have that one). I also grow 'Ann Endt'--very hardy and healthy shrub, very purple single flower. Good luck!

ummm... i don't think smoking a bong is allowed! and drinking beer, well that would be allowed! i'm ok, jimi is my brother, but i raised him from a little thing!! LOL mom being a trucker and all. the other thing i can do pretty easy! pissing me off!! LOL he he he amazing aren't i! LOL funny how those kids are, when your not, looking they just do what they want!! my mom went and got tabor some of those heelys, so now he's like all cool. LOL sooooo, he wears them to church, so i make him change them, and he can wear them at break time, LOL the good news is my banana plant is comin out of it! before after like almost a week. so my banana plant is doing much bettr!! can't say much for the canna's. errr! one was just about to bloom too!! i was FINALLY gonna see this special yellow! LOL and one i've been waiting on never bloomed yet, won't this year thanks to the frost! that's it! i'm moving!! LOL :'))

Fishy, I am giggling at the magnetic locks, those must be pretty funny to watch adults try to get into! April! I am so sorry, I didn't congratulate you on your new walking baby! Congratulations! That is great news! Well, except for you needing her to sit still right now, lol! Letha, Mmmmmm, cookie dough body butter, sounds really yummy. Careful now, those little men may try to take a bite out of you! No big plans for me this weekend. My girlfriend might be coming over to visit tomorrow night. Both of us are so busy anymore it is hard to find time to get together like we used to. Might take the kids to see B Movie on Sunday. Medo, I have been wanting to have a greenhouse ever since I saw Ed's cousin's. He built one for his wife. He's an electrician and installed the mechanical windows that are hooked up to the thermostat. Installed a sprinkler system and tons of racks. It attaches to their family room by sliding glass doors and she can just step right in from the house. Her garden is amazing! She has the most gorgeous yard. They have giant pampas grass, elephant ears, a pond, arbors, gorgeous perennials. Absolutely beautiful. She is able to start her plants so early in the greenhouse and they are so big and healthy come spring. Lucky duck!

Hi, Letter! No problem with the questions - my pleasure. The brand and model # of the fridge is in my very first post. And yes, we have a "wall" on the right side of our fridge, too. See what's green in the above photo? That's the wall. (It "jigs" then, beside and behind the fridge) What's creamy white is all cabinet and trim. I think you can better see what I am trying to explain if you look at the two pictures of the plans, posted very early in this thread. That should make it clearer to you. Let me know. We couldn't recess the fridge, either, our steps to our upstairs are on the other side of that back wall. But I think the counter-depth fridge works nicely to really look "built-in". I really love the fridge, BTW. It is beautiful, works GREAT, holds a TON, and is so user-friendly! The granite overhangs the peninsula 11.5" and I think it's perfect. Even my 6+ foot tall hubby doesn't have any trouble. And the peninsula seating and the table nearby is also quite nice. I find that we tend to use the bar mostly for informal breakfasts and snacks, and the table for dinner. And while we don't have small children anymore (or grandbabies yet!) I can envision (for larger meals) the kids sitting at the bar while the grown-ups sit close-by at the table.

Congratulations on your soup, my own from a turkey frame has never really pleased me either. If making turkey soup, I've bought fresh wings, turkey parts, browned them and gone from there.....and not for years, chicken soup just so much easier. As is chicken and noodles, chicken and dumplings (my personal fav)

My FIL when living used to take all our holiday turkey frames and freeze them, use them later for soup. His was very good, he'd add a little of this, little of that and fuss with it all day long until he was satisfied it would please us for dinner ;). I'm glad yours made you happy too.

Made mine today, too. Froze 3 1/2 quarts of turkey soup. It will come in handy when it's really cold. I put in the left over gravy and a couple of tsps, of poultry seasoning. It tasted pretty good.

Sounds yummy! DH asked me yesterday to make him "Turkey soup." In a pressure cooker I put 3 cups cooked turkey (some skin), water, 2 chicken bullion cubes, organic celery, and (last of the garden) kale, carrots and green onions. Added garlic, and the last of the herb garden's oregano and basil. Cooked for 45 minutes, de-pressurized and then added home made egg noodles, a pinch of lemon juice and 1 teaspoon sugar. Delicious!

I make a big pot of turkey and vegetable soup every weekend after Thanksgiving. Stock is ready and will put it all together tomorrow. It is my oldest son's favorite meal.
