Comments (5)scale is impervious to topical solutions ... you either pick them off... smother them with oil ... or treat with a systemic ... all my houseplants go outdoors for summer.. in early fall.. i treat all the media with a systemic.. outdoors.. and then bring them indoors a week or so later .... if you want to go the oil way ... timing is imperative.. to insure you attach the CRAWLERS ... this years hatch .... as they have no hard shell at that point in the life cycle ... but for me.. finding that 3 day window of opportunity remains a mystery.. as life usually got in the way.. during those few days ...lol.. which is a very fancy way of saying i forgot... lol .. ken ps: i doubt.. your insecticidal soap was labeled for scale.. so that would have been your first clue of the failure of that method ... BUT!!! ... also note.. a dead one.. looks like a live one.. so scratch a few off.. look underneath ....and determine if you actually have a current problem ... suck it up.. they dont bite ... Comments (13)those bugs are the worst. I had a severe case of indoor aphids not too long ago. Tried all kinds of mixes.. I finall asked for advice on these forums, and the best thing that worked was a simple water, hand soap (mild soap, no dish washing detergents), and isopropyl alcohol mix. below is a link to the thread... http://forums.gardenweb.com/forums/load/pepper/msg0115061527817.html?26756 no real measurements.. just a lot of water to enough soap for a mild foam, and enough alcohol so that you can smell its presence. Sprayed over night every ~3 days until i couldn't find any bugs. sprayed on top and underneath the leaves. Comments (19)It's been a month since the pics at the top of this thread, so here's an update, with pics in the same order. There are two plants of each of 3 varieties. Below are the supermarket Thai bird chilies. They might not appear a whole lot different than the first pic, but they have actually grown quite a bit and have been moved from 2" to 4" pots. The problem is that they want to grow tall and narrow, and I want them short to keep them manageable under lights. So I keep clipping, clipping, clipping. One of them had set a lot of flower buds but then the branches rapidly grew taller so I cut all those branches off (except one branch on the left-hand side that wasn't growing as aggressively, where you can see a bud about to bloom): Next are the Thai Sun peppers. These are doing the best, they've flowered and are setting lots of small peppers. They got moved from 2" pots a month ago to 6" pots now: Here's a close up of some of the Thai Sun fruit: Finally, here's the Tobasco peppers, definitely the slowest of the bunch, still in 2" pots like last month. I've pinched these once to force them to bush out, but it looks like they have a naturally bushy form so I probably didn't need to pinch them. Not sure why these are slower, they just are I guess. Comments (7)Steve, you crack me up...lol Just put aluminum foil around the buckets and you will have shiny ones too) Rene, now that your trees are outside they will grow back leaves suited for summer. You gained leaves that are use to lights not the sun and that is why you shedded the darker older ones. They should grow back. Becareful though not to put your trees right back into the sun right away or they will burn off. They actually look pretty good for being held up indoors for so long. Hope you are not in stoe for another winter blast like we are here in good ole New England( As for the bugs, I use Neem oil mixed with a bit if natural soapy water and drown/suffoctae the buggers. Not sure whay they are, too hard to tell. Did you use outside soil, or a bagged sterile mix? What kind of soil is that?...See Morehabjolokia z 6b/7
