These are a couple lemons on one of the new Meyers I got Friday. Does this indicate previous disease or pest issue?

Comments (1)The first place to look, in your job as plant detective, is the potting mix. Is it very coarse textured and fast-draining? Most commercial potting mediums are almost entirely peat, which can make them sludgy over a bit of time. You either have phosphorus deficiency, nitrogen deficiency, or both. I suspect you have multiple micro and macro deficiencies going on here, but I don't think severe phosphorus deficiency is contributing to this degree of pith. So, fertilize now, again in a month, and then in September. Give your tree one more fruit cycle and if it continues with this huge amount of pith, I would simply replace it with a more worthy cultivar. Taste the pulp and see if it has a sweet lemon flavor, or a grapefruit flavor. That will at least give you an idea of the group this citrus may fall under. Palestine lime tastes like watered down lemonade. But, to me, this appears to me to possibly be just rootstock at this time, and something you'll want to replace with a viable cultivar. You'll know because the fruit will be very bitter if it's just rootstock. Patty S. Bacterial blast also causes small black spots on rinds; copper fungicide injury looks very similar, but with phytotoxicity there are no brown to black Septoria fungal fruiting bodies growing in the pits (as shown here). Septoria rot pitting is usually relatively shallow and does not extend deeper than the oil-bearing tissue. Anthracnose Identification tip: Brown to reddish green, discolored streaks on the rind called tearstaining are symptomatic of anthracnose (shown here). Septoria spot and occasionally other fungal diseases cause similar discoloring. Bacterial blast Identification tip: Infection results in small black spots on the fruit. Comments (18)Perhaps, but my feelings are generally let citrus be citrus, way too many people try to apply general deciduous fruit tree pruning rules to citrus, which is a very bad idea. Citrus is a closed canopy tree, not an open canopy, also citrus wood is far more flexible and will handle far more weight than the wood of common fruit trees. So unless you have an out of control limb in your way, or one drooping to the ground don't touch it, also you DO NOT need to thin the fruit on in ground citrus, it will tend to shed any fruit it can't support. If it does not succumb to Citrus Greening disease, which is rampant in Florida and has no treatment, all it needs is a bit of fertilizer and maybe water in the unlikely event of a severe drought....See More

8 years agoJohn - I know Oberon is foliar spray only but have you also used Movento? Movento is foliar and systemic.
I have a new lemon starting and the rind is starting to get that same look. Not sure if I should just foliar spray.
