I grow both Prairie Sunrise and Paloma Blanca in the same cold zone 4 spot of my yard, and they're both hardy and healthy as far as I can tell. I have a pretty high tolerance of Blackspot, but I don't recall noticing any of note on either plant most years. Doesn't mean they don't get some, but it certainly doesn't defoliate for me. My impression is that Paloma Blanca blooms more frequently, but the colors of Prairie Sunrise are more interesting. I'll see if I can track down some photos to back up these impressions.

Getting fairly used to seeing at least some spots here as well Cynthia. Even thou Nebraska can have fairly dry hot heat in summer it's still good to know. Thanks.

Patty, Prairie Sunrise is one of the most beautiful roses I have. I think it is above average in every way. Blooms all summer.

Oh my thank you Susan. I've been trying to find a rose with a little punch of color to place in front of Julia Child when I came upon this rose. Looked like it would be perfect.

I've had Prairie Sunrise 4 yrs. I managed to do everything wrong to this poor rose (delayed planting it till it was too warm, moved it at the wrong time, planted it under a clogged gutter where it got flooded almost out of the ground) but it survived. It's a very tolerant rose. It may rarely blackspot when pressure is extremely high. We live in a seriously high blackspot area but I can't remember it ever defoliating. The blooms are wonderful if you like apricot roses that are full and fragrant. I really like it.

Thanks Kes thats exactly what I'm looking for. We have high black spot pressure here in summer. Livin Easy and Easy Going are in this area as well. They aren't bs free but not so bad as to remove them.

How I wish my Prairie Sunrise did as well for me as it has for so many others. I had the highest hopes for it. Perhaps one day soon I will give it a second try.

My Prairie Sunrise was not vigorous at all. It never got over 14" tall, died too the ground over winter, and the flowers crisped in the heat of summer. The stems were also weak. It was in an ideal spot in my garden where it had every chance to shine, but never did.

If I can get it on mutilfora, which is getting more and more unlikely as time goes on, I bet it would take off for me.

Has anyone noticed how that fewer and fewer Buck roses are being offered for sale anymore? I suppose time marches on.

When Chamblee's states that Quietness was dropped for 2018 from their line because of low demand, you know times are changing. They are offering Carefree Beaut only...just one single Buck rose is being offered, when just a short while ago about 2 dozen Bucks were listed by Chamblee's.

Heirloom lists one of the largest selections of Buck roses, at 46 varieties, but right now, at the beginning of the sales season when stocks should be abundant, only 23 of them are in stock.

I cannot understand why Heirloom lists so many roses that they do not have in stock currently, and have not had them in stock for a long time.

If you are looking for Prairie Sunrise, Sam Kedem of Town & Country Roses has it listed with a good number of other Dr. Buck roses. He appears to be selling roses by mail order again after not doing it for several years. SAM KEDEM His web site says "shipping Apr & Sept only" on the "order roses link". I don't know about his shipping abilities because I live close enough to him to shop at his place, his plants on site have always looked real good.

I've never order from SK. Are they grafted or OR roses?

His web site says "Offered own root & budded".....so I'm guessing you should email him to find out what he has & if budded, what root stock.

I got mine from Almost Heaven roses in 2004, according to my records. It's own root and has been a verrrry slow grower. It finally started to do something just last yr! Not sure why I have such troubles with the baby o/r's. They seem to take forever to grow for me. But now that this one is finally getting going, it's had some lovely blooms. Despite having lots of petals tho, it blows pretty quickly.

bethnorcal9 Your comment "it blows pretty quickly" is one of my main complaints with many of Dr. Buck's roses. I shovel pruned a few because of this trait.....'Night Song' & 'Serendipity' are 2 examples, I swear they had daylily genes. 'Honey Sweet' has about the best bloom life of his roses that I've grown.

Your rose is beautiful. I think I ordered once eons ago from Almost Heaven and was disappointed in the size...

Please remember that probably some/many/all? of the Buck roses ended up virused. I do not know which , if any, went through a virus cleaning cycle or which were found in a never virused state.

And yet Quietness is a Buck rose and gets rave reviews. Now I am kind of nervous about ordering it.

Patty - sorry I didn't see that this thread had resurfaced till recently. Bella Rosa picked it right - the climber in the back of this picture is Quadra. I have both that one and Illusion at the corners of my house in the front, and Quadra is hands-down the best of the two for hardiness, frequency of bloom, and size of the bush. It's a killer climber (almost literally) in a cold zone particularly.

Thank you Cynthia for responding. I *almost* started a new thread to try and grab your attention with you name in the title. I have Quadra and Prairie Sunrise. We are moving to a smaller home and yard and have potted up my roses to come with me from the previous house. I plan to set that combination up with the two. Cynthia, score one for me! Great pic! I don't have Quadra. I did have it at one point, but moved it and it died. Dumb, I know. After seeing your pic, I'm inspired to try it again. What do you feed your roses? They are so lush.

Patty - glad to help! It sounds like you have a great plan for these roses after the move, and I find that the color combination works for me. I'm impressed that you were able to find a pot big enough to wrangle Quadra into for the move, though if it were young it might be less aggressive. Now you can use your new thread for showing us pictures of the roses in their new homes next spring!

Bella Rosa - you really think I'd FEED a monster like Quadra (smile)? That's kinda like putting out cookies for King Kong. Admittedly I do throw out some alfalfa and 10-10-10 fertilizer at his base when I feed the other roses once in the spring, but since I only get around to doing that every couple of years he basically fends on his own. World domination doesn't depend on mere human behavior - just plant him and get out of the way. He's easily my biggest and best reblooming climber. Yes, you need to replace yours (smile).

Kristen & Bella Rosa - from what I understand it, every rose propagated has a decent chance of having mosaic virus lurking that may pop up now and again, but I really don't find that it has much effect on the rose in the long run. Supposedly it can reduce the vigor of the truly wimpy roses, but the Buck roses are bred for zone 5 and they can shake off the effects pretty easily. Mosaic virus (RMV) is not by any means the immediate death sentence of RRD, so I mostly ignore it if I see symptoms of RMV. By all means it's good to support companies that go through the work to virus index and attempt to clean the scions, but that's only available on a fraction of the roses out there. I don't let it stop me from a rose that I really want.

H.Kuska comment: in the heat of Nebraska's summers the above statement is probably accurate for at least 2 of the 21 or so viruses that can infect roses. These 2 are PNRSV and ApMV. The rose immune system against these 2 viruses is temperature dependent. The immune system is effective at high temperatures but not at low temperatures. In the heat of summer these viruses are mainly in the roots (where it is cooler).

Heres my Prairie Sunrise September 20. I had stopped fertilizing in June and did not spray. Not a spot on those leaves. I bend these down with logs and put bags of leaves over, sprinkle a few TomCat granules as we have voles in winter. I'm in Apple Valley MN.
