Open Shelving in kitchen

Open shelving has been a popular design style but for those of you who have lived with them, what do you really think?

I love the openness but didn't even consider it for my remodel because of two reasons: dust and clutter.

My family considers any open surface as a dump zone with things piled to the max and looking like multiple Towers of Pisa. I don't want to do intervention cleaning every week when those shelves become massive eye sore and danger zone of falling objects.

DUST - it's endemic at my house no matter how much we clean. I can't even imagine the crusts of dust that will build up on anything in the open.

I've been scrubbing my floor every day while I grout and seal. Every single time I clean the floor, I had to go through 8 buckets of water before it's clear. The next morning, a layer of dust have settled and the first round of water is always black even though there's no traffic or work in the zone.
