What is blooming right now, in full sun, in zone5-6?
Comments (17)Sue, I hate to bring this up - I always enjoy discusions about what plants to add to existing plants and I don't want to rain on your enthusiasm - but where are you planning to add these new flowers? Is there more to this bed that's empty or emptier than the bed in your picture. I ask because my Alchemillas are currently as tall as your 3 Endless Summer Hydrangeas and wider. My Endless Summers are nearly as tall as my 4 ft tall fence and 3 ft plus wide. My guess is that in 2 or 3 seasons you'll need to move things out of the current bed. From your pix I'd think that adding a few annuals here and there would add the late color that you're missing. Here's a few old views from my garden - I thought about posting them in the "What is your stupidest garden mistake" post, except I couldn't decide what area to show everyone! LOL 2003 Stone Bench bed. Same stone bench with alchemillas in bloom 2005. Can you find the bench? the mugo pines? the stone path? Alchemillas long gone from bench area. Picture is from 2007. The Lady's Mantle was moved to back side of the 3 trees in this long skinny bed. Alchemillas were replaced by Caramel Heucheras and Strutter's Ball daylily in the center section edged by the stone path. Since the above picture was taken, an alchemilla seedling has seeded itself into the second heuchera and is nearly as large as the heuchera! I haven't figured out how to separate the two - heuchera are really touchy in my garden - and I'm afraid if I pull it and tear the two roots apart (if I can tell which are which) then replant the heuchera - it will promptly die on me. :))...See MoreZone 8a..Full of Blooms/Buds Still Outside Fertilizing now??
Comments (3)I stop fertilizing about 6 weeks before I take it in. I don't want it growing taller; but rather I want it to grow stronger and develp better roots. Hence the flowering is sacrificed a little, but I still had a magnificent show before I brought them in. It would break your hearts to see all the flowers I cut off before I brought them in....See MoreNow the roses are in full bloom!
Comments (8)Thanks everyone! We have really had a chance to enjoy them this year. We have been on vacation and the weather has been wonderful. We have been trying to finish up painting on the house, so have spent many hours out in the yard. mandolls, I have had very good luck with Easy Elegance series of roses. Also Explorer roses are good for our cold winters. I do almost no winter protection, just leaves blown around the base of the roses. In the pictures above: in the round bed is EE My Girl which has done very well and is in an open area. Also above, the 2 bushes along the sidewalk, is EE Sunrise Sunset. If you are considering a climber I have William Baffin (can be a monster) and usually only blooms in early summer with a few blooms off an on during the summer. But Ramblin' Red is a great climber and blooms most of the summer.(last picture). Hope this helps. I have many others, but these are the ones that stand out. Others that do good, are Champlain, Cuthburt Grant, the Northern Accents roses (Ole, Sven and Lena. It really all depends on what type of rose you are looking for. I have several Knockouts too and they do well and add color. More winter die back on them, but they rebound quite quickly....See MoreSome that are blooming right now
Comments (8)bgrose - Thank you. I totally adore my William R Smith - he's covered in buds right now and the blooms just last for ever! Thank you Leslie, La France is still a baby, the blooms are so large on it that the stems just nod. Yes Snowfire has a white reverse, my daughter Alanna just loves this rose. Beth I hope that William blooms for you this year, he is a delightful rose. You will really love him. Thanks Judy - I like to get roses that are not as popular so that I can enable the rest of you :o) lol - seriously I usually see it on here check it out on HMF and if I like it get it - that is how I now have way more roses than I have space for! Thanks Jean - isn't spring just so much fun? Aprille...See Moregreenhearted Z5a IL
