Yup. Definitely an oak. Can you take a photo of the tree above it? Any dried leaves on the ground that you can photograph? Maybe a white oak?

No other photos. The acorn probably fell out of someone's pocket. There is a bare parking lot, no trees close. It was by the loading door.

I should add that I have some Q. alba in the bag with it, and they are plumper, wider in relation to length. The albas are not local, I was given them at a nutty meeting. I think this acorn had been quite narrow, not much taper till it was run over. Want a photo of it other side up and with the albas?

It really does Ken. That's a very elongated acorn with longitudinal stripes.

my tree... which is white edged variegated.. gives striped acorns ... lets see if i can find a pic ...

i was all excited.. because striped seed pods in hosta.. give variegated baby hosta... but alas... not in oak ... go figure its not a universal rule ...

i would like to win one of these tree ID games... even a blind squirrel should be able to find a nut once in a while... or in this case.. an acorn ... lol ..

Quercus robur 'Argenteo Marginata' ... though i wont be surprised if someone tells me there is a better name ....

Thanks folks. Whatever it is, ID might be easier if it sprouts in the spring. Robur does seem a lot like it.

Actually, to me it resembles Live Oak, either virginiana or fusiformis, unlikely in your area unless someone picked it up down south and brought it home.

i am pretty sure.. the striped ones are only on the variegated tree ...not on the green species tree ...

this all started with me saying i was guessing ... so dont turn all my other replies into some authoritative ID ...

Just curious, but where is PEI?

PEI seems to be Prince Edward Island, in Canada. Should be some cold hardy oak then, I guess that makes quercus robur even more likely.

PEI is on the east coast of Canada. I do have a robur oak at home, but its acorns are not as long and skinny. I had not seen ones as long as the photos from Kew Gardens before, so I didn't know they came that long. I'll have wait till it's light again and see if there are any robur acorns left. Usually Crow eats them all. "Crow" is our pet raven. Our kid was only 3 at the time and couldn't say raven yet, so he's a raven named Crow.

Incidentally, has anyone seen red oak acorns sprout in the fall?

I have some on a saucer of clay that I just gathered from under our trees, and was a bit slow bagging them up, and some have sprouted. There is no doubt as to species, as I got the parents from Forestry, and added a few from known stands of rubra oaks. They had perhaps a month of close to freezing temperatures outside, but some of that was while they were still on the trees.

The picture looks like a quercus muehlenbergii, also known as the chinkapin oak. These do grow as north as PEI.

Quercus cerris? Or Q. ilex? Maybe Q. agrifolia?

Whatever kind of oak it is, it must not dry out before sowing. Not sure what it will think of having been driven over but only one way to find out.

I have it in a bag of damp clay in the fridge, with others. As for partly squished seednuts, some grow. I've gotten a tree from half an acorn before, but the remaining seedleaf still had the plump little triangular embryo bit attached. It made a very small tree the first year, but is now a mature tree.
