Which plan should I choose? Please help!
Comments (15)kirkhall: "with more windows in kitchen, etc, that it will be hot...facing south and west..." Yes, that's a concern. We want to do some solar on the roof too. Our current kitchen is at the SE corner, with lots of windows, and it is much hotter than the other rooms. Our builder is a LEED builder, and he's told us that there is a way to do the roof overhangs so that it "tilts" the sunlight just right so it's not too hot in summer yet lets in lots of light in winter. Hoping that will help. Also, the entire west lot line is a literal deep forest of very tall trees so historically the west side of our house has always been dark and dreary to begin with. That should help too. Looking west: "also gets rid of the extra space of 2 stair cases... but, at this point I don't think it has a good connection to the garage. And, I am not sure what the wall/island is to the right of the eating nook." I agree. That's why I had the architect put that second set of stairs in, which ended up not working well. And that funny little wall is my ill-contrived attempt to not have an "open plan." I want some degree of separation between kitchen and FR. We had a open plan in the Maryland house, and I didn't like it much. It looked beautiful but didn't function well for our family (clutter and noise). I thought about putting a staircase there between, but it interferes with the basement garage (garage part is 24' long, kitchen and FR are both 20' so stair would end up in the middle of the island or something. We don't want to flip the mainfloor plan because all the views and privacy and southern exposure are to the back, and we want the kitchen/FR to have that rather than the formal rooms or stairs. The north side of the house essentially faces a wall of dirt (huge hill) and is fairly close to the road. So how can we get a better connection to the garage in the DH plan? Like Lavender said, I do need/want good access the back areas of the house to the outside from the kitchen/FR. With this plan, I keep envisioning myself jumping 15 ft out the kitchen windows to chase away a fox or something. :-O Oh and BTW, don't put an oiled pot of popcorn on the stove to pop and then sit down to write a quick lengthy reply to a GW post. Don't ask me how I know this. (cough, cough) Well, I guess I could always just burn the place down... my subconscious at work perhaps? Anyhoo - Suggestions?...See MoreWhich sink should I choose?
Comments (11)Thanks so much for all who have replied. So, stainless it is. It really helps to have the imput of others, someone else to look at something to give an opinion. I've seen so many beautiful fireclay sinks on this forum that I love, but when trying to find one there was none that would fit my existing hole so the next best thing I thought would be cast iron, but it seems that the consensus is that a white cast iron would be too much white with my white countertops. So, I will go ahead with the stainless. Thank you! Now the next decision I have to decide is either to go with the 8 inch deep Julien stainless sink with zero radius corners(from their Urban Edge collection) or should I go with the Julien sink that is 10 inches deep with the more rounded corners(from the Julien classic collection)? The undermounting will add another inch to the depth of the sink so I'm worried that 11 inches may be too deep although I prefer the rounded corners. I like the 8 inch depth of the Julien Urban Edge collection sink but am worried that the sqaure edges may look too modern in my old fashioned traditional kitchen. It seems impossible to find the "perfect" sink.... Helou, the fridge is a 20 yr built in subzero that just keeps on running strong.... cilantro, I am sorry that you are not happy with your cast iron, how frusturating that it has stained your countertops! Thanks for letting me know that your Kohler cast iron has not held up well, that's too bad. What did Kohler say, have you called them?...See MoreHelp! Which Island should I choose?
Comments (26)I would go back to exactly what beuhl gave you as what she gave you is more efficient. Notice your latest plans still do not give you wide enough aisles. Your aisle between island and stove wall she has as 40". However that is not accurate since she has it 40" from cabinet to cabinet. Assuming a 1 1/2" countertop over hang on both sides, you're now down to a 37" aisle and that doesn't include the stove handles sticking out even further. The NKBA recommends a minimum of 42" (from counter to counter, not cabinet to cabinet) for a one person kitchen. So right there you've lost 5" of work space for one person. If two or more of you cook in the space you won't have any room. Your space between sink and island is even worse. After taking into account the countertops you're down to a 36" aisle. If you want the most efficient kitchen then you need the prep sink on the island. Below are both beuhl's plan and yours. Red indicates how we start. We take food out of the fridge and bring it to the sink to wash. From the sink we move it to our prep space to cut, dice, etc. That's indicated in green. Finally we move the food over to the stovetop to cook it. That's indicated in blue. Notice in beuhl's plan there is no crossing zones but in the plan without the prep sink, you're crossing the too narrow aisle to go from fridge to sink. You don't need 59 1/2" behind the seating, but you do need more space in your aisles....See Morewhich door color should I choose?
Comments (3)green! I don't think exterior has to match interior. It seems that the exterior needs to be somewhat classic, or subdued, while the interior can be changed at the drop of a hat....See MoreButternut
