Comments (15)My top 5 (plus a runner up): Quietness Marie Pavie Aunt Honey Julia Child Belinda's Dream Heirloom Marie Daly, although an 'Earthkind' Rose does get BS enough to defoliate about the bottom 1/3+ by the end of August, Why it is 'Earthkind' and Marie Pavie is not, needs some explaining to me. Marie Pavie is the better rose of the two, IMHO. More restrained growth, more flowers and slower to rush through a blooming cycle, and some very little BS on only the bottom 1/5 and then only at September's end. I do not believe there is an entirely BS proof rose. Even the Knockouts can show some BS, but usually only under extremely stressed growing conditions. Even if a rose who was well researched, was found to have glowing disease issue reports, and it proved to be BS free in your garden for 10 continuous years, it can have a bad 11th. year for BS and throw the owner into a tailspin. Generally such incidents are glitches with things returning back to normal in subsequent years. What usually causes such an episode are extremely favorable conditions converging at that time so favorable for BS that no rose could show full resistance. Such events are encountered very rarely, fortunately....See Moredo you ever see ogrs for sale in your area?
Comments (20)Berkeley Horticulture, near San Francisco, had an odd rose assortment this year. Hundreds of H.T.s and Floribundas and Shrubs, the usual suspects that they sell, in addition to a few roses that I went to at once, and ignored most of the moderns: R. banksia lutea, Mutabilis, R. glauca. "Mlle Cecille Brunner" which were marked down to $15 each, and I bought two for the price of one. They had dozens of cultivars of Austins, (Austin roses have lots of advertising) but I wasn't looking for Austin roses. c. 50 miles from me, Regans in Fremont California used to sell a few Old Garden Roses but these were hidden in the back of the nursery, 50 yards away from the rows of rosebushes for sale, and I asked why they had them put so far away I was told "No one buys them" - gee, I wonder why? There were no signs posted that even hinted that an old garden rose might be on the property and I had to ask, and be shown where they were hidden away. I bought a "Mme. Alfred Carriere" Rugosas, and a "Paul Neyron" beside a "Felicite Parm." If I'd been a newbie and bought Paul Neyron and F.P." I would have wondered why the Felicite Parm. never re-bloomed Luxrosa...See Moreas an ogr lover, what are your favorite moderns, hts and old hts
Comments (29)Good question to ask here on the Antique Rose Forum, Aimee! I enjoyed reading the answers of other ORG lovers and discovered some really exciting roses this way for myself! Here is my input: Hybrid Teas: Anna Pavlova. This one is a real gem in my opinion that found its way into my garden by accident. I do believe it is a rarely grown HT even though it was just released in 1981, that deserves more attention. Very beautifully formed, pale pink, full bloom and a surprisingly strong damask fragrance to die for. Frederic Mistral. A winner in my garden, light warm pink color and strong fragrance. Vigorous grower. Memorial Day. Deep pink color, huge blooms with a very intense perfume. Moonstone. Huge and I mean really huge classic white HT blooms with a pink edge. Very good cut flower. Unfortunately I only can smell a very faint scent. Mr. Lincoln. Dark red, that fades to blue-ish red, which I love, with a super strong fragrance. If you are looking for a red rose to give to the very special person in your life, this is the one. Pope John Paul II. My favorite white modern HT. The flowers are humongous and the fragrance knocks your socks of and is wafting. Vigorous rose in my garden that has been never without flowers since the first flush this year. Floribundas: Iceberg and Iceberg, climbing. I love them because they are so floriferous here in SoCa. Always give you a reliable punch of white color, where you need it. Only flaw in my garden susceptible to mildew at certain times of the year, but the advantages outweigh this drawback. Nimbus. Very unusual flower color. Brownish-mauve at times. It is a very special interesting rose, that I am sure will not be loved by everyone, but if you are into unusual colors it might be the one for you. Our Lady of Guadalupe. Silvery shine on cool pink flowers that open in a very elegant way. Grandifloras: Sweetness. Relatively new introduction. Produces very beautiful lavender colored blooms with a strong fragrance. What stands out for me is that this rose is completely healthy in my garden. That is very rare for a lavender colored rose, which are known to be disease prone. Shrub Roses: Belindas Dream. Very awesome, full pink flowers. Strong fragrance. Cymbeline. Older David Austin rose with a very unusual elegant almost pink-grayish color, that is hard to describe. Eden Rose 88/Pierre de Ronsard. To me one of the most beautiful modern roses with an old-fashioned look. Flowers are large, cupped and very full. Color is a creamy white with pink in the center. Even though many people claim that this rose has no scent, I can clearly detect a pleasant, mild, fruity, fragrance. Pretty Jessica. Small bush with exquisite, clear pink, very cupped, flowers. I like that this rose doesn't get the monster size of many other David Austin roses. Scepter'd Isle. Very elegant, pale pink, cupped shaped, flowers with a strong myrrh fragrance. It shows it yellow stamens in a very charming way, when the flower gets older. My plant is still very young but so far I love it. The Ingenious Mr. Fairchild. Also new to me, but already won my heart over with its strong citrus fragrance and beautiful, pink (darker in the center), cupped shaped, blooms. The Prince. Another new arrival in my garden, but boy the very dark crimson flowers fading to a wonderful dark purple color of this rose are just outstanding. It looks almost like velvet and the intense fragrance is another nice addition to the already very impressive blooms. Christina...See MoreShowcase your Cool Pinks
Comments (19)I agree with Pat Bama that most of my pinks tend toward the cool side, since if I want warmer tones my eyes drift toward wanting apricot rather than a warm pink (though many times those apricots look pink in hot weather). Here are some of my favorites - the hotter the better! I dearly love the subtle stripes of Vick's Caprice, and it fits well in the OGR section of my back yard beds. This is a slightly out of focus shot of St. Elizabeth of Hungary, but it's such a great mauve-pink double rose that doesn't get discussed very often, I thought I'd throw it in here. Bad Worishofen/Pink Emely doesn't have the mauve tones of the previous two, but it's a solid wall of cool pink. Elmshorn is supposed to be crimson, but to me it's a medium to deep cool pink, and a trouble free bloomer. Earth Song at the center of this shot is definitely a cool pink, but it makes a nice transition between warmer apricot-pinks like Polka to the right and the hotter colors just starting to the left. If we expand into the pink blends, Meilland Decor Arlequin is definitely in the cool pink category. And among the stripes, Fiesta is one that stays in the hot pink range without going crimson most of the time. Cynthia...See Moreingrid_vc so. CA zone 9
