I found about twenty roses with RRD at a local box store about six weeks after their grand opening. I went to the garden manager and had him get the store manager. (It was a Friday afternoon, too late to contact the state inspectors). I explained the situation. The store manager called for the clean up crew and I watched as all the sick roses were carried out to the dumpster. The store had RRD sick multiflora on fencelines within three tenths of a mile of the front of the store and blooming roses had been set out for the grand opening...all in front of the garden center. On Monday I called the state inspectors, and they checked out the greenhouses where the roses had been potted and grown out and the roses remaining there were clean. This lead to RRD being linked on the Southeastern Ag Inspectors website, where they go for up to date info (the daylily rust links there are also good.) You have two parts of officialdom you can contact if the store owner doesn't do the right thing: Your county extension agent ....mostly to warn them, they have no power.' Your inspector who works for both the state and federal governments who inspects all nurseries (sellers and propagators) and who is responsible for healthy correctly named plants being sold. Some need to be brought up to speed but most will listen and learn. And then there are the two separate stories from Nashville and Memphis where probably RRD was seen in nurseries and when the people got enough info to go back and talk to them, both were told that "rosarians" told them to just remove the ugly growth and everything would be fine. And the roses did sell before the worried folks got there. If you have trouble finding your local state ag inspector, the nurseries should have a certificate from them (and you may be able to get a name that way.) (And this is why I dislike e-commerce from uninspected growers.)

Was at L's yesterday trying to buy wood-crafting tools they don't even sell (go figure!) and the few TC's left were on clearance. The $10 were $5 and the $3 plants were .50. Although there were several bigger ones with white, very white flowers, even I couldn't rationalize such a purchase with the present-budget. So I got 7 little .50 ones with the lightest colored buds. For $3.50, worth waiting for a year to see what they open to, assuming all of these buds will fall off as I'm expecting. I also picked up all of the broken pieces from the floor & stuck them in the tray. A few look promising, and total mysteries regarding flower color. Now, where in the world am I going to put these things? I'm pretty sure I'll be cutting more/bigger holes in the sides of hanging baskets & sticking them in those. Seriously no room for any more pots!

The crossed swords usually indicate a military officer, and the torch eternity (or, truth/knowledge). It may have been produced as a commemorative for a military death. If you type crossed swords and torch into a search engine, you'll get a number of hits where military have used this symbol.

I don't know about your specific species of Diphasiastrum, but in my neck of the woods, my experience in trying to move them from areas slated for building suggests that they are difficult to transplant, even when only getting moved short distances (several feet). This agrees with William Cullina (New England Wildflower Society and Coastal Maine Botanical Gardens) in his book Native Ferns, Mosses & Grasses where he says, "I hesitated about whether to include the clubmosses in this work, as they can be quite refractory in cultivation." He goes on to rate them as difficult to propagate from division (though he has had some success) and unsuccessful in his experience from spores. Elsewhere I found a comment that it could be 20 years from spores, so between the two, I imagine that it's not commercially feasible. I've also read some speculation from Cullina and others that they may need mycorrhizal fungi to grow well, though I don't think this is established as fact. I don't know if anyone has tried growing them from tissue culture. I did find one sales listing for a bog Lycopodium, L. appressum from the Meadowview Biological Research Station in VA.
