samsung fd fridge: rfg237/238aars vs. rf268abrs ?
Comments (11)I understand about the curved doors and handles on this fridge. Because of its placement in my kitchen (near the pantry door, at the end of a line of stuff), its not a problem for me that the fridge sticks out a bit. This could be a problem if the fridge were in the middle of a line of appliances, though. OTOH, any (most?) FD fridge needs clearance on each side, so both main doors can open fully (i.e., 180 degrees) -- particularly for removing interior shelves and bins while cleaning. It depends how the door hinges work -- how far the doors bend back when opened fully. This may be easy to overlook when you see a row of fridges in a store. I've had my Samsung #238 running since about Labor Day, and overall am very pleased with it. Its very quiet (compared to an ancient Amana that had gotten pretty noisy over the past year), and I like the interior LED lighting fine. [I understand a local repair service deals with Samsung stuff, but haven't needed them as yet. Service may be an issue: To be safe, its wise to verify local service availability for this (or any) brand.] If I have any complaint, its been with Samsung's "Energy Saver" feature. A button somehow makes the fridge operate on less energy. I've tried using it twice, but both times after a few days condensation appeared along the center vertical crack between the two main doors. [When I turn Energy Saver off, this condensation disappears.] The first time I turned this feature on the fridge had been running for a few days, and so was presumably fully chilled. The second time, we left town for a few days and the fridge was not opened or used. Maybe I won't be able to use Energy Saver at all, or perhaps it depends on seasonal variation in humidity -- not sure yet, but I can't imagine what else it might be. This is a minor concern for me, but it may be more important to other potential buyers....See MoreFisher and Paykel door at 90 degrees?
Comments (3)I've got a F&P single door bottom freezer fridge. Mine is in a 36" cabinet opening with cabinets on one side and a side panel on the other. The doors sit proud of the cabinet opening -- the fridge body is cabinet depth, the doors are in front -- and we have no trouble accessing the bins. Our model is the one with the freezer door with pullout shelves behind it, not the one where the whole freezer pulls out as one big drawer. I checked, and our freezer shelves can be pulled out with the freezer door opened 90 degrees. The fridge door, however, needs to be opened a bit farther to allow the produce bins to pull all the way out, because the door shelves get in the way if the door is at 90 degrees. You can open the bins and access the contents with the door at 90 degrees, but you can pull them out an extra inch or two if you open the door to more like 110-120 degrees. Just another note on organization. If you are getting one without a deli drawer, like ours, and decide you want a drawer, the Container Store regular size shoe drawers fit great inside this fridge. (Most fridge bins are too long front-to-back for a counter-depth fridge.) It took me a while to find something that would work, so I thought I'd share. The link is below. And just in case you're getting the same model with the freezer door that we have, the bottom "shelf" is a deep bin. I had the hardest time finding something to organize that thing, but it turned out that IKEA Kusiner boxes (in children's storage) fit perfectly, 3 in a row side by side: http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/20163265 (Sorry, I've tried about 10 ways to make that a clickable link but none of the codes I've tried work on this forum, and I can't find the instructions quickly.) Comments (12)I fought the full vs counter depth battle in my kitchen and lost to DH and the architect and ended up paying a lot more money for a lot less refrigeration space. I admit it looks better, but function wise it was a sacrifice. For some reason, the extra space behind the fridge so it could be full depth and recessed in the wall never happened. Anyway, I finally helped solve the issue with a separate compact fridge that I bought for dirt cheap (back to college sale) that we put downstairs off the patio area....works well for serving at parties and I can shut it off when not in use so it saves energy. But any time I'm faced with a big round platter, it's still a challenge....See Morejwvideo
