16 vs. 18 gauge Stainless Steel sink? Ticor or Universal?
Comments (8)16 is commonly used in zero and half radius sinks because the thicker steel is needed when the shapes are not stamped out. Either is wonderful providing the grade of the steel itself is high quality. The percentage of nickel and chromium determines corrosion resistance. The higher the percentage, the better the grade of stainless. 304 grade stainless is comprised of 18% chrome and 10% nickel. Comments (8)In my business, the cabinet installer sets the farm sink or apron front sink. Then the quartz or granite (or whatever) tops are templated with the sink in place by the countertop fabrication company. Two weeks later, they set the tops....then I send out the plumber for the hookup....See Morewhich stainless steel sink brand is best for a single bowl, about 30"
Comments (5)What is your budget? You could spend $250 or $2500. I recommend Kraus sinks. A lot of bang for the buck, great reviews on this forum and on sites like Amazon and Overstock. Often when you get a more famous brand name sink like Blanco or Franke you are paying a lot for the name, but if the sink is one of their lower-priced ones, they are not make in Switzerland or Germany either....See MoreStainless steel sink - 18ga or 16ga?
Comments (7)I disagree with @Sammy. I think it's important to have the thicker 16-gauge sink. Mostly I can tell by the sound - e.g. when a fork lands, if the gauge is too thin, it sounds tinny and goes through me. There are many people that think 18-gauge is fine. I do not. Regarding Sammy's mention of a Swiss-made 18-gauge Franke sink: those cost $1,200+. Though the Chinese-made Franke 18-gauge sinks are in the $400-$700 range. The Chinese-made Kraus 16-gauge sinks, that come with sink grid for free, are in the $250-400 range. Many happy Kraus owners on this forum and online. I do not have any knowledge of Ruvati. If the OP has the $1,200+ budget for the Swiss-made Franke 18-gauge sink, that's great. If not, I can see no reason to pay so much more for the Franke sinks not made in Switzerland--and same for the Blanco-not-made-in-Germany sinks and Kohler-not-made-in-Wisconsin sinks--they are charging more because of their badges on the sink. I'd just get the Kraus 16-gauge if you do not have the budget for a $1200+ sink....See MoreLily Spider
