Schefflera house plant dying - what to do??
Comments (77)Nothing TO do other than turning things over to the Dept of Patience. One important reminder is to be extremely careful not to over-water. Use a wood dowel as a 'tell'. The wooden stick (bottom row of tools and toward the right) is something I use as a root pic, but it's almost exactly what you would use as a 'tell', only difference being your tell would be 24" long and sharpened at both ends. Use a 48" x 1/4 or5/16" birch dowel rod from a hardware or home improvement store. Cut it in half and sharpen all 4 ends in a pencil sharpener. Push the dowel deep into the pot (as in all the way to the bottom), then remove it. If it comes out moist or stained dark by the soil, withhold water. You can also use a bamboo skewer in a pinch, but the dowel is better. If the plant is going to live, you should see signs of back-budding inside of 2-3 weeks, but it might take longer. I've worked with temperate plants I thought were dead go a full summer with no signs of life, only to wake up the next spring and grow like nothing was wrong. Comments (2)Hard to say. But one safe and sometimes suprisingly effective approach is a strong stream of water to wash away the apparent pests. Whiteflies can transmit viruses, including leaf curl viruses, for which there is nothing you can do. Whitefly eggs are very tiny. Larvae are easily visible. Hibiscus, for one, replaces leaves by the old leaves at the bottom browning and dropping, but it shouldn't run to the top. But that can also be many other things, over moisture at the roots, excess heat, etc. If it was me, I'd watch the watering carefully and wash the leaves and see what happened. Hopefully, someone else has something more useful to say....See MoreWhite bugs in saucer under spider plant
Comments (13)We are in Canada so as far as I know, most of our bugs are harmless. I think if one of our centipedes bites you (pretty rare) it is like a bee sting. My mom just hates them, she lives in a ground floor apartment and she sees them a fair bit. They kinda pop up unexpectedly in your bathroom, so she has gotten a bit phobic. In our house, we have a no kill policy - as long as you are not a mealy bug! So we either live with the bug or put him outside. Once we found a catapiller type-thing in our produce drawer and we feed it, and watched it transform into a moth. For the record, the transformation looked painful :-)...See MoreFor adult eyes only...making hoya babies...
Comments (4)I wonder if it is possible to cross Hoyas with other species? I'd like to cross one with a Venus Flytrap or a Tropical Pitcher Plant (Nepenthes). An Epiphyllum/Orchid Cactus would be an interesting cross, too. They're epiphytes, just like Hoyas. Brad AKA Moonwolf...See Morerooftopbklyn (zone 7a)
