Can someone tell me about carpet (wall to wall)?
Comments (6)We recently recarpeted our home. My experience is to stay clear of the "box" stores as they generally carry lesser grades of well known brands but, most significantly, the sales people are not knowledgable like experienced personnel from carpet specialty stores. Additionally, the low price install is offset by other costs applied by the "box" places - like padding and stair install charge, haul-away, etc. We believe our premium to purchase from a specialty store may only have been $125 and the install is very nice. I believe there is specialty padding for basements with a built-in moisture barrier. That said, I would be VERY cautious about wall-to-wall carpet in a basement. Basements are generally damp and you must consider the possibility (certainty) of a water heater leak or sump pump failure. I would suggest an area rug or a bound carpet which could be removed should it become necessary. Our stairs to the basement are carpeted with a very dense nylon plush which has minimal matting after several years....See Morehelp with wall to wall carpeting
Comments (3)We are asking this question as well -- I hate picking out carpet! 10 years ago we selected a commercial grade low loop carpet to withstand two boys and two dogs. The carpet did not perform well in any way, shape, or form. Now that the kiddos are 75% launched and the dog is 15.5 years old, we are looking at replacing the tragic flooring. So far, we are leaning towards a dense Nylon textured carpet with multiple colors and a short pile. We are staying away from wool for several reasons; Nylon seems to be the next best fiber for high traffic areas. Hoping someone with more knowledge/experience chimes in!...See MoreWall to Wall Carpet Newbie - Soliciting Input
Comments (8)Yes the pad is very important. DH put a memory foam, 7/16" or 1/2" pad under the new carpet in the master bedroom. It's heavenly. There is no way to tell you how much your carpet, pad, and installation will cost. You could spend $100+ a yard on carpet or $15 a yard on carpet. JUST MAKE SURE IT'S NYLON! and a Stainmaster carpet. Pad prices vary also as does installation depending on where you live. I don't know how much our new bedroom carpet cost retail because we got it at cost since my husband is a carpet installer. Our cost for just the carpet for a 10 by 16 room was just over $900. We already had the pad and of course his labor was free (; There are too many things that can go wrong when ordering carpet. I would not suggest buying it online. The wrong carpet could be shipped, the wrong color, bad runs in the yarn, shading abnormalities or a number of defects. Quality control isn't what it should be. Forklift driver loading or unloading the carpet could ram the end of the forklift through the roll of carpet. You would have to go through the hassle of of having it shipped back. Shaw makes a good quality carpet at a good price. Good luck....See MoreArea rugs as alternative to new wall to wall carpeting?
Comments (8)I did this with a worn out wall to wall carpet in my bedroom because I knew I was remodeling and would be replacing the old carpet with wood flooring. I cleaned the carpet and then put a very large area rug on it and it was fine. Mine was a large Karastan in the classic Kirman pattern. I just finished my remodel and am using the same rug except over the hardwood floors. It worked for me because it looked as though the rug was intentionally used over the carpet. As others have posted, it would depend on exactly what the layout was but I don't see why it wouldn't work. I have seen area rugs being intentionally put over wall to wall in living rooms as part of the design....See MoreRelated Professionals
