Very nice, Bengardening--thanks! I love crafts that make something from "nothing."

I also looked it up. Loved the earth tones used in several. I'm interested in almost anything that involves "home decor". :0) Thanks for the insight to a "new to me" art.

I love this! Recycling into something so useful and long-lived is very good. And it must be fun to do. Your DH is so sweet to make the loom for you.

Why is it called twining? (Sorry if I missed that info.)

My mother used to make braided rugs from wool strips using a small metal device. Twining reminded me of her making those rugs. They were pretty.

I don't know why it is called twining. It may be because you intertwine the long strips across into up and down loops. That's the best way I can describe it. Yes it is fun and it is fun to see the finished product.

I still want to try this, I wish I could rent a loom to see if I liked doing it. Thanks for the info!

I just searched twining and love the concept. My husband is going to make a loom for me. He thinks he can make one that is adjustable to make different lengths of rugs.

I am happy to see there is interest in this. The lady who taught me learned how to do it at a blacksmithing convention he was at. It was one of the programs they had for the wives. For that they used material that was bought at Walmart for 50 cents or a dollar a yard. Since they don't have that anymore most are using sheets now. I used some valances for one of mine. They say you aren't supposed to use curtains though. The sun can cause the material to weaken. they have been made with denim. I haven't tried one of those yet. The sheets have to be at least 50% cotton or more. I have also picked them up at rummage sales. Flannel sheets will not work. There is another kind that will not work even though they are the cotton. they will not tear the way they are supposed to. I have had 2 of those and I just throw them in the garbage instead of wasting my time with them.

I have an old rug loom that sits on the floor, and takes up about 4' x 4', maybe a little more. I will try to attach a photo of DD and DGD weaving on it. I have had it about 15 years, and in all that time, only made one rug. DD has recently become interested in weaving baby wearing wraps. Basically one long strip of fabric. She is learning to weave rugs to learn the concept before investing in replacing the heddles and so forth that are rusted on my loom. They are fine for rugs, but would wear too much on a fine fabric that would be used to support the weight of a baby/toddler. Flamingo, this is Amber and her youngest, Arrianna. Her son is now 12! Amber is 31 now. When you met my family, Amber had just graduated high school! Arrianna was helping by stepping on the warp peddles! I think if someone else would cut my strips and put the ends together, I would weave more. I do enjoy it, just don't like the prep work.

Your DD and little GD are so cute, Tami! What a great loom, I bet you all make some really nice wovens on it.

Thank you. I have only made one rug. DD is planning to make some for gifts. Remember teaching them to stick spoons on their noses when we met? They can still do it, and are passing on the tradition!
