What would you do with this: solid roots in pot?

There is almost no dirt visible at the bottom! This is a Bowles’ Golden
Sedge, the last of a load of sale perennials I bought a week ago.

Normally I tease the roots apart with a fork. These were
packed so densely even that was hard to do, though. Roots coming out of the bottom
holes I had to cut off with a scissors before I could get the pot off.

Curious to know if there is a better approach when faced
with this. Thanks!
