Fragrant Fall Flush Suggestions?
Comments (9)Tea roses are my favorite class of rose, for their exquisite breathtaking beauty, and generous re-bloom through November, where I live, where H.T.s produce their last flush of the year during Sept-Oct. For fall fragrant bloom, Noisettes are also a good choice they produce a gorgeous display of Autumn blooms with very attractive foliage, for very little work. C. a dozen cultivars are grown at Morcam park in Oakland, Ca which is a no-spray garden, that is located within a more humid microclimate (near a lake and a Bay compared to San Jose's heritage rose garden, which is a hotter, dryer location. Despite the fact that in the moister microclimate roses are more likely to succumb to p.m in spring and blackspot during our warm autumns, still these are all healthy enough to thrive with never being sprayed with anything. 'St. Leonards' which supports itself against a 4' tall stone wall. One of my favorite white roses. 'Champneys pink cluster' from a Canadian nursery, this turned out to have great re-bloom and is far prettier , to my eyes than the ubiquitous 'Blush Noisette' 'Catos' Cluster' has a damask type scent, very attractive soft leaves and is the healthiest Noisette I've grown. It blooms in Spring, Summer and Autumn here and is one of the most asked about plants at Morcam. 'Reve'd'Or' and Mme. Alfred Carriere' the later is a bit more suseptible to p.m. and blackspot in our conditons. Ca. form of 'Lamarque' very attractive late autumn garden display, In November, when the H.T.s have dropped their foliage and they appear as bunches of sticks, ca. 'Lamarque' stands proud, fully clothed in dark green foliage with a mass of ivory-white roses blooming all over it, as if it were still summer. At S.J.H.R.G. 10 stars out of 10 for fragrance: 'Secret Garden Noisette' I ruffled with my fingertips, one blossom and the scent remained on my hand even the next day, after I'd washed at least twice. White with bright pink edges. I love what you're doing to keep old roses in the public view, Luxrosa...See MoreRed Climber for Partially Sunny Spot?
Comments (13)Hi suzeprich I have climbing Etoile de Holande for it's red color, rebloom and not least of all fragrance. It will probably reach the top of your trellis the third summer after planting. It is one of my favorites. I noticed the suggestion of Souvenir du Dr. Jamain and if this rose does well in you area it is fantastic. Will reach about 10 feet in my climate, at least up against a wall. My best climber in a shady spot is Sympathie, blooms and reblooms very well with minimal sunlight, just a few hours in the morning. It grows fast and with the right pruning it will cover your trellis from top to bottom in large cluster of dark red roses. There is a light fragrance too, that fills the air when it is in full bloom, but I wish it was a bit stronger. It is very hardy and very fungus resistant. No matter how hard black spot can be some years this rose stays clean. It can get a bit leggy, but is easily prevented with good pruning and is a very vigorous grower. Flowers abundant no matter how the weather is like. Can easily be kept at around 9 feet or so but will grow very tall if allowed (20 feet no problem). I find this rose very easy to prune and shape. These are my favorite red roses and well worth checking out. Good luck with your rose search :-) Here is a link that might be useful: Sympathie on helpmefind...See MoreRoselovers - How is Your Fall Flush?
Comments (13)Nova, LD holds up for a good week in the vase. One of my best for cut flowers. Felix, Thanks, I believe this is the 4th year but was one of those roses that took off right away. I don't think that there has ever been a time when it didn't have at least some blooms on it. Mine is on fortuniana rootstock. I don't know if anyone sells it on fortuniana any more although Cool Roses in West Palm is getting into some of the english roses so they may have it. It does get black spot, but I spray weekly and keep it under control . I have almost 50 roses on my little lot so the poor things are a little close causing more fungus problems than if they had some breathing room. Comments (5)I posted the genetic study on HelpMeFind which found that the bush and climbing versions weren't genetically identical, and in the paper, the conclusion drawn was that the climber was a seedling of the bush, rather than a sport, based upon an 87% genetic similarity. This would indicate that the relationship between the two plants examined could be parent and self-seedling. Another interpretation/possibility that wasn't mentioned there was that some plants being offered as the bush 'Cramoisi Superieur' aren't the original, but possibly self-seedlings of it that were similar enough to pass. This could account for some "versions" being more fragrant than others, and wouldn't discount the possibility that the climbing version actually was a sport of the original. Or it could have been a sport of one of the self-seedlings being sold as the original. Vintage Gardens had as their bush form a "reversion from the climber" which was said to grow larger than other bush forms being offered. So that right there indicates that there are at least two "versions" of the bush form of 'Cramoisi Superieur' in commerce. If the climber actually was a sport of the original, a climbing version could have also potentially sported from one of the self-seedling bush versions out there, leading to more than one version of the climber as well. So keep that in mind if you get different accounts of the rose's degree of repeat-blooming. :-) ~Christopher...See Moreozmelodye
