Red Climber
Comments (25)Quadra is a very good, disease resistant, hardy, repeat blooming red climber. It is simply too good for what you want to do, and I'm having problems coming up with something smaller. Blackspot pressure is a lot lower in the midwest than in the east. Right now you are hitting a fairly common forum dynamic where the midwesterners are suggesting roses which the easterners are telling you won't work. So you end up with a very frustrating thread. There are a lot of suggestions, but almost nothing that counts. Where do you go from here? You could try posting again in the Antique Rose Forum. In general, people there don't spray, and a different group would have different ideas. You could also try adjusting your ideas of what the final result will be. It seems to me that two matching roses on either side of a small arbor translates into lanky shrubs instead of climbers. Not that I have any great shrub suggestions, but hardiness is less important for something like that....See MoreVarious Climbers, HMusks, etc: opinion wanted.
Comments (63)Just browsed Nortland Rosarium website, they are in zone 5b .. and they never sell Felicia nor Perle d'Or .. both of them are NOT hardy for zone 5. That's why I prefer rooting them from cuttings, rather than buying them and losing them through zone 5a winter. http://northlandrosarium.com/table.php Northland Rosarium offered Peter Mayle in Sept. & Oct .. now they offer Rouge Royal as own-root instead. Pretty Lady rose and Miranda Lambert are also offered now. I also see Rhapsody in blue, Love Song, and Twilight Zone offered as own-root. So tempting !! I would buy them if they survive more than 5 years in zone 5a. I'll wait to see if my new approach of digging down to 2.5 feet for drainage & put tons of leaves on top & water in dry spring is successful before buying more roses....See MoreWhich shrub Teas would make decent low climbers given support?
Comments (27)Hmm, Virginia, you've got me wondering now about thorns. I will have to check the Mrs. this weekend to see if she is low thorn. I don't recall ever being bitten by her thorns...only by the fire ants that love to live under her. I've been growing Mademoiselle Franziska Kruger for about 5 years now if my feeble memory is right. Slow grower at maybe 4 ft high by about the same width now. She doesn't throw the long, low canes that MvH and MDC do in my garden...instead has a rounded, twiggy China-like habit for me. Mine would look nice in front of a fence, but would not “climb” it, and depending on fence height, may never reach the top of it. I think MFK does prefer your climate over mine, though, so may grow much differently for you. She’s a great rose here from mid-summer on, but early season she sulks with bs and balling issues. Here’s a full bush shot of MFK from June (please excuse the background views…BIL’s junky old shed on the property line between us in back right and Zephy canes defoliated from BS in back left). And some close ups showing short, twiggy canes:...See MoreLady in Red got pinned! Anyone else have pictures of her as a climber?
Comments (14)Wow! That is so much growth. I'm thinking mine would devour that trellis in a nanosecond! : )) I guess I never posted my pics. Oops! I'll try in a bit. Anyway, after being in a pot and languishing I planted her earlier this summer and she's spent all this time putting down roots and leaves. Poor thing was completely defoliated. I think she'll soon be putting out a mass of buds and give a good show for late summer. Cl. Crimson Glory is doing the same, but has flowered today. THE BEST SCENT!!! Florentina is also chugging along. I expect great things from this one once I move the trees and trim the shubs that are shading her a bit too much. I love all these red climbers. However, if you love this one, get another. It's wonderful to have more that one, especially to cut and float in bowls! : )) P.S. I'm really liking Sally since she's in the ground! What a bloom machine and such a refreshing looking rose....See Moreozmelodye
