Cramoisi Superieur climber: Any decent rebloom in the fall?

I'm expecting delivery of this rose and I understand it is not a great rebloomer. But could one expect a decent flush in the fall? That would influence where I will be planning to plant it. If there's no decent fall flush it will be planted further from the house.

My Cramoisi Superior is blooming very well right now. HMF does not list a "climbing" version - is there a bush and a climbing version? Mine is a bush about 5 feet wide and 6-7 feet tall.

My baby Cramoisi Superior has a handful of blooms right now. It was received as a band sometime during May.

I can't offer an opinion on cl. CS vs. cl. CB (having not grown either yet) but this this brings up a question of interest to me . I have just rooted some cuttings from a climbing rose in the backyard of my daughter's apartment building in San Francisco. The rose sure looks and smells like Cecille Brunner and is about 12' tall, but very rangy and a bit depauperate (lots of shade and it's growing in the middle of a giant bamboo stand -- good grief, how bad can it get for a poor rose?). The rose blooms off-and-on all year long -- in fact, was blooming during this past January and February. On the other hand, there is a church here in Livermore that has Cl. CB growing on it and I've never seen those rebloom after the spring flush. So, I've been wondering if there possibly are clones of Cl. CB that are remontant. Have you thought of rooting a cane of your mother's plant? Most plants that make woody stems will root from the stem/cane. Bend a flexible branch or cane to the ground and cover it with good soil, and weigh it with a rock or pin it down somehow. Bend the rest of the cane upwards and prop it with a sturdy forked twig. Keep the soil on the buried part moist but not soggy for a few weeks. The places in the plant that have the most root hormone naturally are the stem joints, where the leaves grow from. When the joint is placed on or under the ground, it stimulates roots to form instead of leaves. It's how plants like wild roses and blackberries "walk," in nature. If you do this with a rose, you get an own-root plant instead of a graft, of course. You can also take cuttings from roses and use rooting hormone. You would need to be a little patient--you are not getting a shrub size plant this way, just a twig or single cane! But you would be getting the same thing your mother has, which you seem to be interested in. Good luck!

I grow CRAMOISI SUPERIEUR (China, 1832, Coquerel; own root from Countryside Roses) in my mother's coastal Virginia USDA Zone 7b garden. It is a beautiful, virtually carefree rose. The cherry candy-like fragrance is especially lovely. In my mom's hot/humid garden the blooms have never balled. I think it would be fit into your chosen spot beautifully. The airy growth habit allows plenty of room for companion plants, which is a positive plus if you are trying for a cottage garden look. Once the rose is mature you could plant some fragrant tobacco (Nicotiana alata), perhaps with some Heliotrope or blue petunias for a stunning, and fragrant, red-white-blue display. NUR MAHAL (Hybrid Musk, 1923, Pemberton) should also do well. The Hybrid Musks are known for their shade tolerance and this particular cultivar gets consistently high marks from rosarians in the Mid-Atlantic and Southern states. It is fragrant and has an arching growth habit typical of Rev. Pemberton's roses. The canes are also said to be nearly thornless. Another option is DOUBLE KNOCKOUT (Shrub, 2004, Radler). It has the same disease resistance as the famous Knockout but to my eye the red color is more saturated. The cupped flower form reminds me of Cramoisi Superieur, but is not as tight so there should be no balling problem. The light fragrance is nothing to rave about but is at least detectable under most atmospheric conditions. The shrub is definitely more densely foliated - so if your looking for more of a specimen plant then this modern rose might be a better choice. Oh yeah, when I actually (rarely) CAN pronounce the names correctly, I feel pretentious. "Agrippina" brings back fond memories of "I, Claudius". Noble Agrippina the elder, doomed to early widowhood & exile; Livia, aka "Ulysess in petticoats", et. al. Plus it's just a pretty name. Pretty rose, too. One of my very first OGRs. I think the photos represent its true color very well.

I posted the genetic study on HelpMeFind which found that the bush and climbing versions weren't genetically identical, and in the paper, the conclusion drawn was that the climber was a seedling of the bush, rather than a sport, based upon an 87% genetic similarity. This would indicate that the relationship between the two plants examined could be parent and self-seedling. Another interpretation/possibility that wasn't mentioned there was that some plants being offered as the bush 'Cramoisi Superieur' aren't the original, but possibly self-seedlings of it that were similar enough to pass. This could account for some "versions" being more fragrant than others, and wouldn't discount the possibility that the climbing version actually was a sport of the original. Or it could have been a sport of one of the self-seedlings being sold as the original. Vintage Gardens had as their bush form a "reversion from the climber" which was said to grow larger than other bush forms being offered. So that right there indicates that there are at least two "versions" of the bush form of 'Cramoisi Superieur' in commerce. If the climber actually was a sport of the original, a climbing version could have also potentially sported from one of the self-seedling bush versions out there, leading to more than one version of the climber as well. So keep that in mind if you get different accounts of the rose's degree of repeat-blooming.

Still, is anybody growing a rose bought as climbing CS? Otherwise, and since I'm getting it from the UK, I'll have to go with what the Quest-Ritsons say about it which is that it flowers very freely (although less so than the bush form) and is never without blooms. That would be fine with me if true for my climate.
