What groundcover to plan between stone walk?
Comments (7)Just a word of caution re blue star creeper. See my post, "What's the best way to kill blue star creeper", on Sep. 6. Your photo suggests that bsc would work much better than the scenario we had; i.e., as a lawn replacement. It is beautiful and steppable, but so very invasive. Also, when we started the project, we needed a lot of starter plants (at least, we thought we did, not realizing how fast they spread). So we ordered flats through a local nursery and cut them up to plant, rather than buying a gazillion of those small containers, thereby saving a lot of money. The nursery got the flats from somewhere in Oregon, but they weren't available year round and might not be available now. When we were shopping, we just happened to see some ground covers in the large flats; never realized before that they came that way. They were out of bsc flats at the time, but special ordered for us. You might ask at your local nursery once you decide. Good luck on your selection!...See MoreWhat do you plant between stepping stones?
Comments (6)I like to plant dwarf Mondo grass between stepping stones or flagstones. It can take full sun as long as it gets some water sometimes, and will do well in shade as well. It doesn't seem to be bothered by any amount of foot traffic. I really do like it. Look at the second picture that Melvalena posted in the thread "Pictures to make you drool-" on this forum. That is Mondo grass in that pathway. You might want to check out this site. Here is a link that might be useful: Check out these plants too!...See MoreWhat to grow between stepping stones in the shade?
Comments (3)Some of my absolute favorites are creeping red thyme ( deep pink flower in summer), sweet woodruff ( white flower in spring), once it is finished flowering can be sheered for dense lower cover, as it dries it smells of fresh mown hay, and chocolate chip ajuga, ( lovely blue flower spikes in spring ) cut back after flowers, spreads to form dense mat. All will depend on the soil, and the drainage, but I would say plant several and see what thrives....See MoreDoes grass really die between houses
Comments (11)Hmmm, we have grass between our house and the next house, and it's plenty healthy. Thoughts: - I agree with the above poster who says that side yards are prone to neglect, and that might be why the grass doesn't prosper. - How much sunlight will this side yard receive? If the answer is "not much" and you're still determined to plant grass. you need to research a type of grass that'll flourish in low light. All grass isn't equal. - Carrying the mower? No, that'd never happen at my house. If you opt for no grass, either make sure you can go around the other side of the house ... or opt for some sort of step-stone and rock combination that'll allow the mower to cross. - Grass may be cheaper initially, but grass is costly long-term because it is so high-maintenance. Even if you're doing your own mowing, it's going to cost you in time. - You might consider plantings and a path of stones ... again, consider the availability of light in your specific area, but this might be a nice concession between just-grass and just-much....See More- 11 years ago
