Strange growth pattern in young tomato plants

Hi,

I live in Victoria, British Columbia climatic zone 9a. I successfully grow around 7 varieties of heirloom tomatoes in my garden.

This year I'm hoping to grow a couple of plants inside under compact fluorescent grow lights.

The seedlings I planted near the end of August grew very rapidly soon after transplanting from 1" starter pots to 6" cups.

However, the tops are forming in a way I've never seen before. I've searched the internet for clues to the problem, but came up short.

Any ideas on what the problem could be?

That's herbicide damage.

Source may be drift from applied weed killer.

Or may be herbicide carryover in organic matter such as composts or manure.

Thanks for the link to the article, Jean001a. No herbicides were used in the yard. I now suspect the store-bought bag of manure may contain a herbicide. I'm going to conduct some tests to verify this.

I agree with calliope. My friend had a similar result when we had a day that reached 31 degrees. It killed most of the leaves but the plants stayed alive and are now thriving. If you do live in the PNW, like I used to, keep a close eye on the weather or put your new tomatoes under hotcaps, or wall o waters to get the best of both worlds (planting early for established root system and keep them alive in the midst of an unexpected chill). VERY strange growth pattern, leaves & alien seedy type things

I have had my fuschia (I call her the Red had lady) I bought her about 5 years ago. I cut it down, cover it up over winter watering occasionally. She comes back every year (although not like the beautiful hanging basket it was when I bought it) This year there is some very strange growth going on. A branch has regular looking leaves for the fuschia and even a flower, then the rest of the branch turns into what looks like a weed. The stalk is different, leaves are way different and the tip of the branch has this weird seedy stuff on it. Remember the normal looking fuschia plant is also attached to this alien thing as well. The leaves are larger, not smoothed edged, have a pattern of brown in them What is happening to it?

Thank you for the response. I really do appreciate it. I am enough at a loss where I will try anything. so I will give some soil based fertilizers a go. From your experience, does this look like something that could be infectious? Its been like this for about 4 weeks and it hasn't affected anything but the leaves. I am still struggling to determine whether this is the plant reacting to odd treatment or if it is reacting to an infection.

I conducted a test by planting some seedlings into several soil mixes. The problem occurs only with mixes containing a store-bought manure. I'll be contacting the company producing the product to see what they have to say.
