artwork pricing question

I found a piece of artwork online that I liked, but it didn't give much detail and said to contact the artist (none of his artwork is priced online). So I emailed him and he said it was only an 8x10 digital print (photo) which I'm not interested in and he didn't give me a price. But he said he could get larger prints on canvas and I should tell him my budget and he'd tell me what is possible. He's in San Francisco and I'm in the Midwest, so how do I quote a budget without embarrassing him or myself? I could say $300, but he might be thinking $1000 or far more. The artist is a relative of my DIL (I didn't tell her I was contacting him), and has the same name as her maiden name (which she uses professionally) and is employed by a prominent University and an actor (although he's downsizing his artistry to pursue the acting). The theme of the art falls into our line of work so I thought it could be an interesting connection. I casually asked my son about the artist and he thought his works brought in the $300-500 range. But my son & DIL recently contacted a different artist they like and they were quoted $14,000. Is it common for the customer to just throw out a price? At this point I kind of lost interest, so maybe I should just tell him that.
