Amaryllis/Hippeastrum

New to papilio, any advice?

Thinking about getting a papilio (finally) but I'm getting conflicting info as to their growing confitions. I'm in zone 6 (long island, ny) so can anyone give me a good idea of how to grow these? I love amaryllis so I'd really like to be able to grow a papilio

Papaiios prefer to remain evergreen so if you've put your pot outside for the summer (in a semi shady spot I hope) bring the pot in as soon as the nights start to go into the low 50's. Give the pot some sun, doesn't have to be full sun, a few hours in the morning or anytime of the day should suffice. You may loose some leaves but it should keep a few so don't over water in the winter but don't let the soil dry out for too long by any means.
If you should be lucky enough to get flowers at some point, you might want to freeze a little pollen if you hybridize as papilios are very finicky about blooming. I've got some plants that haven't bloomed in a few years, but remain leafed and healthy. In my opinion hybridizing with papilio will give you the most interesting and beautiful flowers possible! If I could only have one pollen to work with it would be papilio hands down.
I leave my papilios inside year round. Good luck....Donna☺☺☺

Hi Hans-Werner, I was doing some searching around for species Hippeastrum and I can say that I found several pictures of papilio crossed with things like cybister and other species. I think these are far more beautiful than any of the Dutch hybrids and I agree with you that once they become more available people will want to grow these rather than the common, all to similar ones on the market today. I think that once the F1 hybrids are crossed back to stabilize the lines and someone markets them well these will take off :o) Dan

Interesting....: "The smaller one I got I repotted into a bark mix, and into a cypress basket. BUT it isn't blooming, and it looks limp now. It was also in moss!" Given said observation why would you now want to risk upsetting a bigger, more expensive specimen? Then there is this observation by tee: "...psychopsis strike me as reasonably drought-tolerant, so you don't need moss to hold all that water." Except that for some reason this is how all of the ones I have ever seen arrive. Potted TIGHTLY in sphag. And you know what, they don't look half bad for the experience. If something works... But the crux opinion in my opinion is Mr. B's: "I tend to think if the light is high enough, it won't make a huge difference what it is potted in, provided you don't overwater" Absolutely and if the light is high enough you can't overwater, in fact you may be challenged to provide enough water. The tight sphag rather than promoting overwatering like many believe, prevents it! How much water can a sponge hold if as you hold it down in water you are squeezing it from every side as hard as you can...? H

Oh I forgot how to achieve the great aim (to boost H.papilio into the bloomable state) Moderate light (but not full shadow) is advantageous and sufficient for these particularly dark leaves. Water very sparely in the beginning so that the compost is not too wet all the time. A fully rooted H.papilio consumes less water as compared to the common gardener's amaryllis, so be carefull! I definitely HAD the very best results by installing this precious plant on the windowsill and letting it there the year-around. That means no definite reposal period. This is in contradiction to that what I read elsewhere ina modern Hippeastrum book; I know. But I was so fortunate with this method. Now, after one season outdoors, and no flowers in 2006 I have returned to this method, and I have further optimized the conditions by using these 11 L-jumbo containers. And, certainly, at last but very advantageous, too, watering from the bottom, using lukewarm water with diluted fertilizer every couple of days when the containers have become considerably Lighter... Well my EverGreen is just so huge, for a 'miniature', I was being funny, saying it should put out 5 flower stalks. I know it wont. I bought it when it was on sale I guess. The sale must be over, and they are back to the regular price. I THINK i bought it on 'Cyber Monday'...so maybe it was a 1 day sale. Guess i got lucky. i will stay with the one bulb,and wait for bulblets to appear for free! I kind of thought i did the right thing with my big clump of my Papilios. I have or will have 3 new blooming size and forced bulbs of Papilio as soon as my replacement arrives,and 2 others I bought. From 2 other sellers. I am hoping one will be the 4 bloom variety. So my big clump is in a nice big clay pot,14in I think,out of a 10in, as long as our cold spells hold off for a few more weeks, last year we got hit with 3 days of 30's here in Ft.Laud. on Dec 12-15th, which was very unusual,...we usually get our 3 days of cold weather in January. Big deal. So..if I get a few weeks of warm weather to wake the bulbs up,and get the clump to grow into its new soil some, then i will be set. I can/will bring them all in the house if it hits below 50,to keep them growing and alive.

It depends on where youi live. It likes daily water when it's growing and very little when even semi dormant.It will lose its leaves only during extreme heat .It needs noon and afternoon shade in my area.It MUST be well drained. It will grow without any soil when misted often.It may be immune to mosaic virus. It most certainly never shows any symptoms.
