orchid with keiki question

I have an orchid with a keiki and part of the stem it's on has turned brown. It doesn't have any roots yet. Should I trim the stem or does it need it for nutrients???

Dendrobiums form keikis because they can. Phals form keikis on a whim. Most other orchids form keikis not at all or when they are under serious stress like this Brassia. One can never be certain, but on the Double delight the keiki formed where the new branch would have. If you want to give it every chance, leave the stem on until it turns brown or you get tired of looking at it. If Phals are happy and in conditions where they send out new spikes, they are less likely to set keikis. If you have moved the plant from the growing area to a display area, don't wait to move it back as soon as the flowers are gone.

Can mini orchids produce keikis?

All orchids can produce keikis. They will look just like the original plant. One thing to know, if you're referring to a "miniature" phalaenopsis: while they'll probably stay somewhat small, mini phal leaves can get much larger if you go up a pot size and give them more room to grow. Lastly: I have 5 mini phals, and none have ever produced a keiki, though they are all at least 50% larger than when I received them (their flowers have remained the same size).

Where do you live? What part of the World? You need to give this info to have us help properly. If you are in a summer climate, cut off part of the stem the keki is attached to. Pot the baby in some moist sphag. You can turn the plant so the roots find the moist sphag. The new leaves will adjust to the position. Once cut the roots need to find the moisture. Don't worry about the leaves, they will grow in the right direction. I like to leave a piece of the mother stem attached, but it isn't necessary. Put the baby in a bright window or outdoors (if in summer) to grow. Jane

Sorry, I do not think it is a keiki. They come from the base or from a node on a flowering stem.

I only have a small collection of Phalaernopsis so I could be wrong. All you can do is observe and see what happens.

Ok if. It's not a keiki. It might just be a leaf. It's been like that since I got it. Should I trim the brown part off or just leave it???

Yes, just trim the stem above the leaf and dust the cut with cinnamon. Typically a keiki will grow at the base or on the tip of the flowering stem. Example:
