Clear Glass Pendants

Rather than hijacking today's Edison bulb and UCL threads, which made me think of this question, I'll start anew. I really like the look of clear glass pendants, especially as a bit of a modern nod to schoolhouse shades, but I'm wondering if they're a pita to keep clean and looking good. Does dust and kitchen 'life' settle on them? Are they easily wiped off with a little windex and a microfiber?

we have clear glass pendants over the island and I wipe them down maybe once a month at most. our fixture over the table also has clear glass and I notice dust on those much more then the ones over the island. I wipe those about once a month too. just use a microfiber cloth and a spritz of the cleaner I use for counters, etc. simple, but necessary to clean them. I wouldn't change them though - I love the clear glass look.

Good question...I'd like to know too.

I suppose it probably depends on how much and what type of cooking is done....they'd probably be fine in my kitchen as I avoid cooking...I just like a pretty kitchen!

My glass pendants do show dust quickly. Mine are on an island that fortunately isn't near the range, so I haven't noticed them getting grease on them yet. They are easy to wipe down with a mircofiber cloth or coffee filters. But, I have to clean them a lot more frequently than I would like.

We have two 100 watt pendants over 41-inch peninsula. I usually crank them down about 1/5. Otherwise, I feel I need eyeshades (at 63, I am sensitive to glare more than DH is). There is lots more light in the room so this is fine. I'm glad I don't have any kitchen lighting that requires fussing with constant dusting. These fixtures are great: mottled matte white downfacing glass shades, which I very much like. The rougher surface doesn't show dust the way my old shiny white globes used to do. I have to use fingers or a cloth to decide whether they're dusty. Bulb underneath is globe in soft white style. No diffuser for camouflage so you look at the bulb if your head is at a certain angle. Might bother a child?

We put up two pendants with clear shades (the Meridian from Sundance). When we ordered the pendants the filament bulbs (which were in the $15 each range) were out of stock. We ended up buying some much cheaper (like $4 apiece) filament bulbs at Home Depot. The shape is a little odd (kind of long and tubular) but the look -- the glowing exposed filament -- is the same. My husband, who is tall, was bothered by the brightness at first (the lights are more at his eye level) but it only took a few days for him to get over it. Ours are on a dimmer and we usually have them dimmed down to about half. I think the bulbs may be 40 watt. Also, like shannonaz, we don't really need ours for light. They're more for looks. And another thing -- the clear shades do get dusty and dirty fairly often but they're easy enough to clean. Here's what ours looks like turned on:

These are minimalist/contemporary, clear glass, made in Denmark. We have them with a very modern-looking LED bulb (by Switch) and it's a cool look. It could work in your kitchen too. I found them at Goinglighting.com and almost returned them before we moved in because I thought they were too big (24”) Now I love them and can’t picture anything else there. Here’s the item #Z-Lite 3035P12-MB 4 Light Pendant in Matte Black. I’d recommend hanging up construction paper with the correct dimensions first because the refund policy isnt great. I don't have glass pendants but I have had glass wall sconces for years. They really need to be kept sparkling clean. The slightest bit of dust makes them look cloudy.

We have clear glass pendants right over the stove and there is no range hood (I know, that's terrible, but somehow we're still alive). We rarely cook greasy foods and in my view the pendants need cleaning once a month or even less often. I love the look and would do it again in a heartbeat.

It helps a lot if the shape of the pendant is smooth rather than dust-catching. I'm always amazed by fixtures that appear to be designed to catch and display dust. Seriously, people??

My glass pendants over the island show the littlest bit of dust and require a frequent cleaning. But I wouldn't change them-- the soft light they put off through those little clear glass shades are one of my favorite things about the kitchen.

Mine are a white milk glass....Never even occurred to me about dust. I've had my kitchen for a few years and I've only wiped them down a handful of times. Nothing shows on them! But thanks for the heads up on the clear light fixture...that's good to know for my clients. I had frosted glass pendants in my last house....those showed more dust/oil spots than what I have now.

Same - mine are milk white and I cook a LOT and even so, I only have to wipe them down every few months or so because they are very forgiving to dust and grease. I can't imagine clear glass being as forgiving. Leave a wine glass on your counter for a two weeks untouched, See how foggy/murky it gets, and that is without a light spotlighting through it.

IMO any light with a clear glass shade or cover in the kitchen requires frequent cleaning. But then, so do my SS appliances (sigh). But, it may be worth if if it's a look you like. Just be sure you can reach all parts of the shades easily without climbing a ladder or twisting like a pretzel.

I have a lantern type light over my peninsula with a clear glass overturned bell kinda thing. It gets dusty but not greasy. I have to take it down and wash it once every few weeks.

The dust doesn't bother me as much as the glare from the exposed bulb with the clear glass. I tried frosted bulbs to reduce glare but they don't look as nice. I tried the Edison bulbs but the light was too yellow.

I'm on a mission to help my dd find pendants for her new kitchen. I would love pictures..... They put up the RH barn pendants and are sending them back.

I just replaced my glass pendants with different pendants that just have glass bottoms, and my kitchen is significantly darker. Disappointed. Kichler Sayre.

Jillius, the brand is John Lewis. The style is Ramona. But they have a TON of gorgeous options, IMO. bc they're UK based, I had to have it sent thru their export dept and then converted to proper US electrical current. My friend has a gorgeous kitchen and has the RH glass pendants over her island. They're a great look, but 2 years after her remodel, she is replacing them because of the cleaning factor. That's actually the reason we didn't get them for ours.
