Hi, I'm not an electrical contractor and would encourage you to consult a lighting professional. Meanwhile since it is the weekend you can check online for any state code requirements for electrical within the tub/shower surround area and/or that your light fixture is rated to be installed in a "wet" environment. I'm guessing you won't have a vanity (wall)light.I don't see your sink, but I like a can(s) directly over the sink and/or directly over the toilet(like grazing lights over kitchen cabinets). Will you have any wall cabinetry? If so, you might consider installing cove lighting above it for ambiance. Good luck.

Eliz I missed that sweet compliment...darn. Thank you many months later. I found ebay to be the best option for bargains, but the other two places I shopped were School House Electric and Rejuvination. I purchased a few pieces from School House and they went out of their way to first find the cheapest way to ship them (I'd called NY but they have a NW Location so they processed it out of there) and they rushed the order because well I was in a hurry up and finish mode :) Rejuvination was my main non-antique source for lighting. I purchased several fixtures (repro) and love the quality, but I also purchased a few antique pieces. Here are a few in place... This one is hard to photograph because the room is so small...it's hanging from three chains but you can just see it. Someday I'm going to have to take pics of each fixture. My bathroom are flush mount 1912 cast iron exposed bulbs...I adore them!

Katrina, I am very pleased with my new lighting. We installed canopy mounted spotlights. I much prefer the look to recessed lighting, and I like a minimalist fixture for an 8' ceiling. If you use a wide angle bulb (we had to order them) you can achieve excellent lighting. My fixtures are MP lighting canopy mounted spotlights with an aluminum finish (X01 C3 - 1 NS NA 1 - MC). They were expensive and we had to wait for them. Each fixture is connected to its own junction box. Currently they are lamped with wide angle Sylvania Tru-Aim Titan covered halogen (but they can be lamped with SORAA LED as well). We found the Sylvania to be much nicer than the equivalent Philips. The lamp (= bulb) is naked so you see colour from the reflective part on top and the Philips threw harsh pink lines on the ceiling. The lights are on dimmers so energy savings are possible there. Because of the wide angle of the halogen, we only needed six fixtures to light our small kitchen. For choosing ceiling lighting I was inspired by one of my favourite kitchens: Lauren Liess'. As you can see, drywall & painting remains to be done.

Thank you all for the feedback. I appreciate the frank replies. The bottom of the beam is at 7.5 feet from the ground and the top of the ceiling is 10 feet. We had a 24" single hanging fixture with 6 or so lights and individual shades. DH hated it and was always knocking a shade down. I hadn't really thought about no light, will consider. Annie - track lighting would be fun, but the current ceiling is nothing to write home about / much less highlight. crl_ here's the one from rejuvenation - I like it better than a lot I have posted. My style is more transitional in other rooms - was also thinking about a rectangular shape like this, not that this works at all: lizbeth-gardener - there isn't enough room for an end table to the right of the green sofa, but there is room for a small table between the two sofas. I could replace the standing lamp with a table lamp, which might be a good thing. sushipup - They do look forced, good description. arcy_gw and dedtired - this room was added on by the PO - I don't think we would be able to install pot lights (no access to the ceiling); or did you mean pot lights on the beam? That's an idea....
