Should I add windows?

Currently building a house and have considered adding a few new windows to the master bedroom and bath. The problem is I'm not sure if it works and would love to see if anyone had any opinions on whether we should go forward with it.

I've attached to photos showing where the new windows would be and a larger picture of the floor plan without the windows.

In the master bedroom, we figure the only reasonable place to place the bed is against the wall bordering the walk-in closet (according to our measurements a king with smaller side tables will fit). Putting the bed between the two existing windows would appear to create a choke point to the master (especially with a king sized bed) so we thought to add an additional window there. FYI - It's not visible on the plan I've attached but there's a bonus/sitting room on the wall opposite from the entry door which precludes placing the bed there.

In the master bath, we were thinking about adding two windows but were worried that we'd be taking up all the space for hanging towels. Also, the window near the toilet/shower would be asymmetrical to the window across from it and on the floor below (it would be offset). However, its on a wall on rear of house so not really visible from the street.

Any thoughts on whether we should go through with it? Am I missing something obvious? Thanks in advance.

What about elevations? About impossible to tell from a floor plan as you need to balance both.

Where will your exhaust fan be located. It needs to be opposite of the intake vent or louvre. Some opinions say not to have the roof vents open with the exhaust fan running. But I do both without a problem. Maybe because my exhaust fans are large enough to handle all the openings. By the time you add shade cloth you should be fine without adding anymore vents. Later in the summer if it is still too hot you could open the door or replace the panel in the door with screen.

Well, it is a bit hard to evaluate - the plan seems a bit disjointed to me, so just a few questions for clarity's sake. Other than a drive up garage, what are your goals? # of br, ba, sq ft. Do you have to have a sitting room? You don't want a dining room? Any of these are fine, it's a preference choice, but it helps to know what your wants are (cause all of us have different ones :O)) How many people are going to be living here? Where do you see the flow of traffic going? You mentioned a wooded lot, is that a view you are wanting to maximize? I'm sure the drive up garage isn't the only reason you picked this plan, however, I've seen lots of other plans with drive up garages that seem to flow better. Plus, the way you've adjusted this one makes it have lots of corners which adds to building price. It really helps to talk these things out when you are in the drawing stages - another reason this forum is so super!

it is rather nice having a plain wall somewhere, to hang some great LARGE art. no gallery wall of dinky family photos, please. in the first photo, is the centered window over a fireplace? i'd almost skip that one if it has a roof above it outside.

Use the same size window next to the regular door as you have on the first floor of the house. Same style and manufacturer, too. A row of windows in the top of the garage doors will add a lot of useful free light. A window box is not practical above the garage doors. Put it under the new window next to the regular door instead.

Could you reverse the toilet and shower and have that window 'match up' to one on the opposite wall, as well as one on the lower level? Unless these are unusually deep windows, there should be room for towel bars beneath them.

I would not want to have to walk around the bed to the closet and bathroom.

Sadly, the plumbing has already been roughed in so we won't be able to move the toilet or shower without difficulty.

I'd still go for one of the windows in the MBA. Maybe it could be a different shape/size than the one below it Not sure you want a window where you'd see into the MBA from the MBR.

My MBA has a window over the tub, centered on the wall, like your plan. Our toilet room is to the left of the tub, with a side window. My DH's sink is opposite that, with a window where you want to add yours.

Can your bed go on the far right wall or at the far end of the MBR? You will tire of skirting the bed to reach the closet and MBA.

Where is the closet for BR #2?

I would say add the windows in the bathroom, specially the one next to toilet. that way you can let fresh air from time to time, without opening the window behind the tub.

for master bedroom, how about adding a big double or a triple to match the bottom two floors ? Three separate windows does not look as impressive as a one triple window.

I edited the picture with a triple. Double was looking a bit off balance to me. you can play with it - may be double window but bigger size..etc. You can have a small seating area / bench inside. Or even think about a bump out with a bench.

Thanks for the comments everyone. I think I'm going to skip the extra window in the master to preserve the wall as a potential bed wall, and add the windows to the bathroom even with the asymmetry that will result. Maybe a transom window on shower/toilet wall would be solution . . . ?

I would place the new bathroom windows high enough to install towel bars below them and make the existing windows in the bedroom 4" wider. Larger windows are cheaper and often more effective than adding windows.
