Bathroom Vanity Makers
Comments (51)Recently bought a Virtu Winterfell 36" vanity (without countertop)from Home Depot because the ability to return to local store with no charges. Went that route because I could not find a single example of this brand in a city of 1M+. Probably 5% higher than other lowest internet alternative without that generous return option. I'm a furniture quality snob who occasionally makes his own furniture and built ins. I'm quite particular. Time didn't allow me the "build it myself" option this time. In short the packaging and build quality was very good and quite acceptable. It is a bathroom vanity by the way and isn't going to get worked as hard as a kitchen. But regardless, the piece is solid with sturdy joinery. I'm not going to say it's as smooth as a ronbow but IMHO the 2x-3x of a ronbow makes no sense unless you're hemorrhaging money. I didn't like the pulls and we plan to replace and the false drawer front to actual drawer connection makes that a little difficult to change (but not impossible). This pertains to a CON for the piece. The knobs attach by a wood screw from the back being screwed into the knob rather than a threaded bolt. That seems like a cheap connection that's likely to fail in the long run. On the drawers you can't access that knob screw head because the head is concealed by the drawer body. You have to take off the false drawer front (a few screws from the backside) to get access to that screw head. Stupid design. They should have it so that someone could easily screw out a normal bolt of a regular knob and replace to one our liking. In reality, I wish they would ship the piece with zero knobs and then I could put whatever type of handle (for instance a bar handle with two holes) although I understand that would drive away people who can't figure out how to put a handle on a drawer front (sad commentary on general public). The espresso finish is very nice, deep, rich, and consistent. The hinges are only a 110 degree type but that's probably OK for the intended use. The undermount soft close drawer slides see very nice...not Blum...but a decent knockoff and smooth running....See MoreFood prices - are they really going up that much?
Comments (66)Jim, the money supply can go up but if velocity is down, it doesn't drive inflation. I've linked below to an article on this. And how much is the money supply going up, really? The Fed is trying to drive up money supply, but the private sector is pulling it down. You can find charts of money supply, here is one: http://www.shadowstats.com/alternate_data/money-supply-charts Money supply has declined quite significantly in the past couple years. dcarch, no question the rapid growth of China and India is adding to demand. However, that growth is coming from a very low level. The consumption of goods and services by the average person in China or India is far, far less than the consumption of the average person in the US, Europe and Japan. Use GDP per capita as a rough proxy for consumption. India is about $3,500, China about $7,000 vs US about $46,000, Western Europe and Japan about $35,000. China's population is 1.3bn, India's 1.2bn, US 311mm, Western Europe 500mm (use the EU), Japan 127mm. So we can get the GDP of each region. Suppose China and India's GDP grows 60% in the next 5 years, which is 10% per year (about the current rate) while the US, Western Europe and Japan's GDP only grows 10% over the period or 2% per year (unfortunately, also about the current rate if not better). The result would be the combined GDP grows 24% over the period or 4% per year. (approximate, I don't have a spreadsheet here, just an iPhone and a pencil). (We could use other proxies for consumption, like energy consumption per capita. Which is why I did the above as a per capita calculation, instead of simply starting with country GDP.) Can the world supply 4% more ''stuff'' per year without driving inflation to very high levels? Overall, sure. There is plenty of production capacity in electronics and plastic molding and LCD screens to supply (far more than) 4% growth in iPhones and similar. There is plenty of assembly and component manufacturing capacity to supply (more than) 4% growth in automobiles. Similar for concrete to make housing, fiberboard to make furniture, etc. 4% will not stress global capacity, especially after a deep recession as we've just had. We'll see periods of volatility in some prices, as supply and demand adjust. Pork, rice, cotton, etc. This volatility will be upwards and downwards, but the price rises will get more media attention. Remember a couple of years ago, when rice was skyrocketing in price, countries were hoarding, everyone was talking about rice shortages? Rice soared to $22. Then it fell to $12, that didn't get much news. Rose to $16. Fell to $10. Rose to $14. Yet during the period 2008 to present, as rice price were cut in half, China and India have continued to grow and consume more of everything - and they eat a lot of rice. The commodities that are soaring today will collapse the same way. Commodities are more volatile today, their prices moving more than fundamental demand-supply would suggest, because more investors are playing those markets, and financial money flows are huge compared to the relatively small commodities markets. In the end, fundamentals still control. Here is a link that might be useful: Article...See MoreZodiaq Order: Holy Cow I've Lost My Mind!!!
Comments (17)hi chocolatebunny... i've been thinking of you, too! i wouldn't give up just yet. your sq footage is 8 ft, but what are the dimensions of your island? would a vanity size fit that? i am sure SOMEONE can fabricate a vanity equivalent for you, even from a remnant. i found my fabricator totally by accident. i was googling something about cambria, and i found a forum he was posting on. he doesn't even list zodiaq on his website; i emailed and asked. so you never know. btw... the Dupont website "dealer locator" was a waste of time! the best/nearest fabricator listed doesn't even sell zodiaq, only corian. he's talked to them, but DuPont doesn't bother to fix their listing. so you'll have to keep hunting. quartz (composite) is expensive, but i found nothing equivalent i wanted. so i feel very fortunate this worked out. but you never really know until the stuff is actually installed... then you can breathe! i really wish you good luck. keep us posted. :)...See MoreHoly Cow, People on Here Buy Expensive Furniture and Accessories!
Comments (138)Outliers is an interesting book. The notion that "luck, coincidence and effort/hard work are generally all required to successful" at least looks at the mix that fate, destiny and the sweat of the brow play in most lives. But I would go a little further & still broaden the concept of "success" to include so much more than career or financial achievement. I think it is a big mistake (that our culture at large makes all the time) to automatically assume that a well-to-do person, or someone with a lofty title, is "successful" at life. They may be, of course, but they may also be full of anger, selfishness, & greed. They may have struggled & strived the joy out of their lives. They may never be satisfied. That is not success in my view. I do believe that life has plans for all of us. As I stated in another post, if we are attached to an image of our lives looking a certain way, we will suffer if life doesn't comply. That can happen at any income level. or..."Life is what's happening when we're making other plans," as John Lennon reminded us. I don't think being wealthy is in the cards for us all, no matter how hard we work. That's not the life every person is meant to lead. But that's not such sad or bad news either! People who have given energy & attention to what is real & capable of providing true happiness (connections, creativity, learning, growth, service, loving) are the most successful, in my view! Money may or may not stem from their endeavors. Either way, what could be more wonderful or more a marker of success, than when people truly enjoy what they are doing, find meaning through it, and are loving & at peace?...See MoreKatrina Tate
