Best Raspberry and Blackberry varieties for Kansas
Comments (7)I have a black raspberry. I think mine is Bristol. The flavor is different from either a blackberry or a raspberry. I really like mine and I find them very flavorful but most of my family prefers the red raspberries. I have Heritage, but I've heard there are better ones. I'm perfectly happy with Heritage though and wouldn't get rid of it for something else. I don't have any blackberries so I can't help you on that. If you do want some variety, try a yellow raspberry. They have a much sweeter flavor than the red raspberries which some people really like. I bought Anne last year and the one berry I had was very good. I have a drip system and it works great. I bought mine from Dripworks which has a lot of options and they will even draw up a plan for you if you want help. As for how many plants, you don't need a lot. They all spread (black by tip rooting, reds and yellows by runners) and will fill in any space you give them....See MoreRaspberry Problems
Comments (8)If you are going to do a raised bed you have to do it with better soil. (read about soil elsewhere on this forum) You are rerouting run-off, if you think that run off was a big problem you can wait a year and see. But if you want to do it now, you still can if you are in the northern half of the US. You dig big chunks and carefully break them apart by hand. Every piece of root goes to the new bed just in case it has enough juice to shoot up a new plant. I would try to shade the new bad in the hottest hours of the day for a while....See MoreFirst year bkack raspberry problem
Comments (3)These are all Black Hawk but I'd like to try Allen also. They are all in the same patch so they all get the same sun and rain, But last year after planting, some had an easier time than others so this year some are bigger than others. they are now catching up with each other for next years crop. They're still green and hopefully will ripen some time next month....See MoreRaspberry PROBLEMS!!!!!
Comments (13)larry gene; I'm unsure if I have any fruit flies, but I have noticed a few flies that looked like a regular fly but were about 1/4th the size and all black - wonder if they are fruit flies? I don't know enough about all the insect identifications, but even though I think some of the wasp like things can be harmful I also read where they all pollinate - and then I read where others grew raspberries and never sprayed anything ever. So I'd go over there and tend my row of raspberries and just watch all the activity, being somewhat jazzed about all the various pollinators doing their jobs. Now I wonder if I shouldn't have gotten on a spray schedule of some kind. I looked up raspberry beetle that you mentioned beeman but I can't honestly say I've seen one of them yet. (And I may have just overlooked it) So I don't know what's making that almost too small to see thread thin little worm inside my berries but I for sure know I dropped the ball somewhere!!!...See Moreparker25mv
