Need a GC and/or Ikea Kitchen installer in Washington DC

Hi, I'm looking for someone to do some renovations in Washington DC for a small townhouse in the Foggy Bottom area. We are considering an Ikea kitchen, but are open to other ideas. We might also need a floor, and do need some other updates. Would like somebody who is easy to work with, lol.

Carnemark in Bethesda is first class, but might be a bit above what you are looking for.

What do mean by above? Price-wise, you mean? The unit is a rental/eventual sale townhouse owned by my mother-in-law. She lives in Bethesda, so a contractor there might be good. I am trying to help her with renovations after a long-term tenant moved out. I realize the unit is in a pricy area and would like a contractor who understands what the market needs. My MIL is thinking Ikea because 1) she is Scandinavian and 2) she is frugal. I told her the kitchens are well-reviewed here, so it might work. But we are open to suggestions. Is this contractor really high-end? Thanks.

Kitchen design may not be rocket science, but it's beyond even many otherwise skilled professionals to both keep up with the current trends and to design something that is safe and efficient to use. Much less attractive. Too many people get used to bad designs and ''make do'' with existing poor layouts when they shouldn't have to. The value of specializing in a field is the in depth knowledge that generalists do not have time to keep up with. It's why you choose a dermatologist or neurologist for treatment rather than having your family practice physician attempt to treat you for everything. Good design benefits everyone. Having a specialist involved benefits everyone. I'm a pro, and I used the services of a KD for one of my projects because she understood what was possible within the cabinet line, and how to do what I wanted more economically Within that line. Two eyes and brains were better than one. And since her services were free with the cabinet purchase, why wouldn't anyone take advantage of that help?

Well, they do two different things. A kitchen designer should help you with a layout and choosing finishes. A GC should supervise all of the work, including hiring subcontractors and arranging their schedules. If you plan to use ikea cabinets and are happy with your existing layout, you may not need a kitchen designer. But I would suggest posting your current layout here to see what suggestions you get. If you are going to all the trouble of remodeling, you should defintiely make sure you are maximizing your space. You may also wish to talk to a couple of kitchen designers to see what they have to offer you. Depending on your layout and door style, you may find that ikea isn't the best or even the cheapest option--especially since you are not planning to diy and will need to pay someone to assemble and install your cabinets. (Although we did just that in our last kitchen and felt that we got an excellent value despite paying for labor, but ymmv)

Help please: so this is CME's website where they say they've installed "thousands" of Ikea kitchens (as Traemand subcontractor I assume). http://www.cmeco.net/home.html Is it a red flag to you that there's NOTHING about them online whatsoever, like they're some kind of fake company? I have messaged the other one recommended above, but so far I like CME's plans and would just as soon go with them. I did contact the Reddit person mentioned above, thanks. No reply yet.

" I actually don't blame the GC. He built what was on the plans." Nope. He doesn't get off that easily. He should know better and be experienced enough to correct an architect. I've done it many times and they hate it. Here's a picture of wayyyy out-of-code winding stairs on a home I'm doing a countertop for that were built in the 90s. I can promise you the architect drew 4 risers pointing into that corner, that's what the framer framed, and amazingly, inspection passed. My customer is pregnant with her first, and the thought of a toddler taking a 29" step with no handrail in a couple years gives me the willies. Of course there is a landing and another set just like these, doubling her chances of injury. I would have told the customer I was sorry, but the bedroom door would have to be moved, because a 6" minimum tread width at the corner would require more run. Were I installing Katrina's cabinets, I would have refused until the paper pushers worked it out and backcharged for ruining my schedule. 'Cause when the red tags come flyin', everyone looks to not pay the guy who put it in wrong first, no matter who or what was drawn.

Jonas runs a first class operation and definitely edges toward clean modern design. I don't think he does projects with IKEA cabinets , but I'm not speaking for him.

Check out their website and you'll get a feel if they're right for you.

Astro -- How old is the townhouse and how large?

I have a contractor who is especially good at coaxing the best out of old houses, and he might be right for you.

I don't know what he thinks about Ikea kitchens, but he is quite willing to cooperate with other strategies for frugal renovation. An example of one such transformation is the the subject of an old Gardenweb kitchen forum post.

Hattysue, it is 2 beds, 1 bath. Small but in pricey Foggy Bottom. Old, I'm not sure how though. Has that historic row house thing going on. I would love your contractor's name, thanks. My MIL is frugal, but willing to pay fairly :)

I lived in a small 19th century row house on 25th St when I first came to Washington. Across the street from us was a row of even smaller historic homes, that were purported to have been built for railway workers. All are now worth their weight in gold.
