Too late to plant salvia?

I'm in Charleston, SC zone 9a. I have a new garden bed that I'm planning and the local big box store had salvia greggii "wild thing" on clearance for $1.00 each.

I know here in Charleston we have to plant high for good drainage with these and at least when I lived in North Carolina they had a hard time surviving the winter if you planted after August. Should I overwinter these in my unheated garage or take a chance and plant them?

Would love your opinions on this! Thanks!
