Do I have to pay for it? Light switch installed on wrong side.
Hi. Originally we were going to have a pocket door to enter bathroom, but upon finding out it was a shear wall we had to switch to a regular door. Which would swing in towards the bathtub. The architect forgot to change the location of the light switch, so now it was installed behind the opening door, which is a terrible design.
Right now, the job is not finished, but the switch box rough in is installed and the drywall. We noticed this issue today and GC says it will cost me $1000 to move light box to the other side of the door.
Should I pay for this alone? Even though Architect messed up and GC missed noticing it? I missed it too as the owner.
You might say, swing the door the other way, towards the toilet. Yes that can be done, but it's not what I wanted, it will be an awkward flow. Every time walking into the bathroom to use the toilet, you need to squeeze between the vanity and the door and go behind the door to use the toilet.
The only other option would be to swing the door out, which in general is not done to avoid hitting people or blocking flow, but in this case it's opens towards the closet hallway
I would love to hear your thoughts on this. And should I have to pay for moving the light switch alone?

Comments (3)I think a good compromise would be for the 2 of you to split the cost of the correct door, and the contractor does the labor for free. You could then give him the incorrect door, which he could either keep and use on a future project or sell. You will definitely get allot farther if you approach this subject diplomatically. Do not point fingers or blame. This will be unproductive and spiral into an untennable situation fast. Ask him/her how "we" can fix it, and that it must have happened because "we both got our wires crossed...". He's obviously not going to be pleased at first. More than likely he's not pissed at you, but at the prospect of fixing what he may very well have known to be wrong from the get go. Comments (8)Have the electricians separate out the material and labor. LED bulbs alone cost $25 to $50 each. So you have nearly $1000 in bulbs alone if you add the mark up and etc. My trim cost about $40 each. I am using a nice reflective trim with chrome on them. Again, you need to know what they cost each for your special situation. Depening on the difficulty of wiring, 5 switches can be many hours of wiring. My electricians charge $75 per hour. Let's say 5 hours of wiring for switches. That is another few hundred. When you say $ per light, it is all misleading. Comments (23)Yes to having multiple two way switches, for all the lighting in the kitchen. And, yes…all dimming capable. We have 3 types of lighting fixtures in the kitchen,,,semi-flush, recessed, and under cabinet, all on three gang switchplates. At either entrance to the kitchen, we can control the lighting. We’ve never found the need to have switches for the under cab lights at the counters, as we always turn on those lights first, as we enter the room. For quick visits to the kitchen, they’re all we need. If you use Lutron switches, lighting throughout the house, and all outside lighting too, can be controled via their very nifty app. Often, while in bed (just before going to sleep), I’ll check the app on my phone or iPad. The app will tell me if any lights were left on, and where. Comments (16)Why not raise the outlet to be up by the new switch location. Replace the BEP3 (3" base end panel) with a B9 or B12.....extend it down. Run your tile across and down to the floor/baseboard. If you don't like that idea, then put the outlet back between the window. What is the switch for? Drill an airswitch in to the countertop. You can use an airswitch for lots of things....not just a disposer. Another solution: Do an angled plugmold between the windows. Are you putting a wall cabinet back there? They will do one with a switch too. Or put the outlet and switch back....split it with him. I think he should eat it....but for $250...keep the peace....See More

Swinging the door toward the toilet is a much better choice because it not only provides a bit more privacy if someone begins to enter when the toilet is occupied but also because it would not cause an "awkward flow" and it would not be necessary to "squeeze between the vanity and the door" or "go behind the door to use the toilet".
In reality, when entering to use the toilet, you would open the door to about 60 degrees, place a foot beyond the edge of the door and swing the door closed while pivoting and stepping back to latch the door, then you would have a clear path to the toilet. You would make the same or similar movement regardless of the door swing or the clearance to the vanity.
If the door is bought but not installed, the cost to correct the error would be for a new door unless this one can be used elsewhere or on another project or returned for partial credit.
No one should judge who is at fault without speaking with all of the parties involved. In any case, it is in owner's interest to find a solution to any problem in a collaborative spirit before dealing with who should pay for it.
IMO reversing the door swing is a better design than both the original pocket door or the design shown on the drawing above.
