Mahogany desk info sought
Comments (18)That hutch is 1930's furniture....machine made all the way. The "mahogany desk" is hand made. However after looking at lots of pictures, I think it would be what is often called a "hunt board"..smaller than a sideboard, a Southern thye of piece...and that bowed front is very typical of a Hepplewhite style huntboard or sideboard. The bow front and the tapered legs say "Hepplewhite style" and the hand done dovetails scream hand made. That's not to say that furniture made since the beginning of the industrial revolution weren't hand made, but those dovetails strongly hint at pre Civil War. Arts and crafts? For sure not likely....unless it was a custom made piece with some designers idea of mixing Hepplewhite styling with Arts and Crafts carvings. It's really lovely....I wish I could see it in person....something about it hints to me that there may have been modifications made? What does the back of the piece look like? Comments (23)Alex, your corner arrangement was so pretty I enjoyed seeing it three times. LOL. But seriously, I really do think its wonderful. The fall colors around the silver has quite an effect. Our Fall album is going to start getting some new ideas for sure. 3 dogs...wooo hooo...right up my alley. I have 6! I'm SO glad Jim sent you here so we could see your decor. That vignette is beautiful. May I add it to our Fall Inspiration Album? I seldom think to 'ask' the gang here, tho I probably should. Since you're new, I'll do it. LOL. hugs,Karen...See MoreWho says money ( $25) can't buy happiness? CL find!
Comments (43)3D, I am certain he didn't have a clue, and I didn't either til well after I got it home. His ad read, "I have this piece of furniture which was bolted to the top of an antique desk, but the two pieces didn't really go together and I prefer the desk without it. It would go nicely on top of a similar piece or a bureau, shelves, etc. Approximate dimensions are 8" d x 30 " w x 30" h. See photo for detail. Glass doors, would be great for keeping books dust free, or other knick-knacks and bric-a-brac." Now it wasn't 'bolted' but he gave me the 2 metal pieces from the back of the top that slide into the corresponding pieces in the back of the desk to lock it in place. I'd LOVE to email him and ask to see a picture of his desk, but mine looks just like the 'bottom' that I see on most of them, so I am happy with the marriage of the two pieces. He laid it in my trunk, and a friend who was here brought it into the DR and laid it on the table. It wasn't until that night when I righted it out of curiosity and could read the label that I had glimpsed as it was coming out of his car. My thrill at seeing the Maddox label was HUGE, as I have experience with their quality. Limogique, Knowing that makes me even happier! I'd buy vintage or antique over a new item any day of the week, and to get this for $25 is incredible. I thought it was stained a bit lighter than my desk until I brought a small drawer from the desk into the DR and set it next to the top. Another wonderful surprise! I have always admired secretary desks like this, and to think that I now have one, that was posted as a 'hutch top'. Just goes to show us that we need to open all the CL ads,as there may be a treasure there under a bad title. I DON'T look at CL ads with no pictures, though....See MoreShow us your best Craigslist or eBay bargain?
Comments (82)I love many of the finds pictured here. I live in an economically depressed, rural area, and most of Craigslist is uninspiring and often unintentionally funny. Some people have big ideas about what their junk is worth! We've done well in the Farm & Garden section, however, both buying and selling. This summer I acquired a riding mower for $375 delivered. The owner is a mechanic (turned out he retired from the company my son works for), and the mower was well cared for. But mostly I came back here to thank My3dogs for starting this thread. As soon as I saw the title, I remembered that it had been awhile since I last checked Craigslist for a cedar wardrobe. My house is very old, and has almost no closets. I've been keeping my various jackets in an ancient but worthless wardrobe that is ready to fall apart, so I've been looking for a good replacement for about a year. Most of the ones listed had no bar for hanging clothes, and were overpriced anyway. So I saw your thread and went directly to Craigslist, where I found the perfect cedar wardrobe: just the right size, with a bar inside the top and a nice drawer on the bottom--for $75! The people even agreed to keep it for me until after Christmas, when my son can get it with his pickup. Thanks, and happy holidays to all!...See MoreMy3dogs ME zone 5A
