Comments (8)How are things going? If what you planted is reliably hardy, no protection should be needed, especially if put in ground in spring. Where the ground does not freeze, heaving is not a problem. Attempting to keep plants that should go dormant in vigorous growth mode at the wrong time of year could be extra stress, not helpful. Unlikely in Z8 but worth mentioning. Couldn't tell if you are talking about plants in pots or in the ground? What plants? If you are zone-pushing Z9+ plants, I don't think I would use any kind of plastic. A pile of leaves is my usual method. Some paving bricks adjacent to the roots (on S side,) or dark-colored jugs of water, dark rocks, can also help keep the ground slightly warmer. Regardless of method, excellent drainage is usually a key factor in successful zone pushing. Wet + cold = rot. Comments (13)I only have 8 roses, although 4 of them are climbers. I'm probably going all out on them this winter since I only have 8 and I bought them all potted this spring. Climbers: Red Eden White Eden New Dawn Zephirine Drouhin Shrubs: Graham Thomas Pat Austin William Shakespeare 2000 Belinda's Dream I have a relatively large oak tree in front of my house, so I am going to use oak leaves. I'm going to buy some chicken wire or the equivalent of it, then prep with winter fertilizer, dump a bag of top soil over the base of the rose, then place the chicken wire around the rose as a cylinder than fill it with the oak leaves. For the climbers, most people don't do anything. However, I am going to protect them as well as I am in a pretty stingy environement still and Red and White Eden havn't been widely tested in my area. This depends on how large the roses get this year, but I am going to dump a bag of top soil over the base, then chicken wire and put oak leaves around the base as well for the first couple feet...or however wide of a roll of chicen wire I buy. The remainder of the canes, I will wrap in burlap together. I don't expect my climbers to be any taller than 5ft this year though, so it's not very labor intensive. Comments (4)Yes, snow is good. Lots of snow is even better. It's when we have no snow, or inconsistent snow cover, that it's bad. Anything in a container will need to be moved into a garage or somewhere protected. Your perennials and shrubs are very hardy and will be fine. The arborvitae are also hardy, keep watering as needed until freeze and they'll be established enough. I put my two terra-cotta potted dwarf alberta spruces in my cellar (unheated & dark) around Thanksgiving, earlier if we're getting some heavy freezes so the pots don't crack. I water very sparingly and move them to a shady spot outside in early spring, then gradually back in the sun. They don't skip a beat. I have friends who have left their potted dwarf spruces outside all winter if they are in a weather-proof container such as plastic or a whiskey barrel, they did fine but I wouldn't advise this. Comments (10)I wrap my little lilacs, that are the same size as your plants, in Jobes tree wrap, and then I close-pin burlap around each one, tightly. Neither voles, nor rabbits have gotten through. And hopefully neither will turkeys. :/ I really like what you've done. It's impressive. I wish I was handy like you and could do something like that....See More
