Clippings gone forever

I've been requesting Houzz to help me retrieve my clippings since the change over. At first they responded and said that combining my Gardenweb ID and my Houzz ID would fix the problem. It did not. Now they are just ignoring my requests for assistance. Did any one else experience this problem as well? All my saved recipes from y'all are gone forever?! (tears) AKA Dreamhouse1.

I am not going to actually be of help, but as I recall, this issue came up during the first couple months of changeover and there was a location or something. I suspect that they are actually not lost. I have also forgotten the precise contact but if you google tamara@house.com or something similar, it should direct you towards her for additional help. Someone else here who had similar issues will also likely come along.

I remember finding mine at some point but now cannot. I can't remember where they were; maybe they are gone. I am equally sad about it, so hope you find out if they exist and where. Please report back, if you do.

Seeds sprout all the time in my flower bed from grass that I let go for birds. With the same token, my yard has been here since before I was born, so current varieties are likely completely different. As far as composting, if I am understanding correctly you are essentially doing the "lasagna" method so hot composting isn't exactly in the picture. I'm guessing the seeds might germinate (if they are able), but I don't think it's a big deal. Just put something over the soil to block the sunlight or use a stirrup hoe. You are bound to get weeds from seeds on the wind and from bird droppings, so you will have to weed anyway. Using a stirrup hoe makes it simple and fast.

AnnT, I'd be so indebted to you if I could get another copy of your cookbooks. I don't want any of you to tie up your computer or go to a lot of time and trouble. I forgot that I've saved several recipes on that feature "My Clippings" so I'm good for some stuff. I think I have Ann's scone recipe there. I'll have to go look. Hi Oakrun, Yes, it is a daunting process. In fairness to all the homeowners here, (and respect to the pro deck builders who give so much help), we homeowners have pretty much one shot at the deck. In other words, we are not builders, and we are not Martha Stewart types, so we have to live with our decisions, warts and all. But on the other hand, we can afford to take a chance on something new. It will not wreck our livelyhood. I have nearly finished my 5/4" Ipe deck, 12' X 30'. After much thought, I went with the hidden fasteners - Tiger Claw TC-G http://www.deckfastener.com/products_tcg.asp They look great! Time will tell if they work. One difference between these clips and many of the old ones is that these are solid stainless, not fiberglass. To get these fasteners to bend would take quite a bit of force. I put one in a bench vise and hit it with a hammer. It didn't bend. One definite advantage of this system (assuming the boards don't lift) over face screwing, is the whole deck is "floating" on the pressure treated frame. The ipe boards are free to expand and contract slightly. In the long term, this may minimize end checking. Also, your air circulation under the deck seems optimal. (I have the same situation). I suspect that many installs of hidden fasteners don't have good air circulation. That may contribute to failure. Installation notes: 1) I used a biscuit joiner to slot the boards where the fasterers attach. It takes time, but I think it's a better job that having the boards slotted along the full length. 2) For butt joints, definitely ease the edges with an 1/8" radius. I think that's a John Hyatt trick. Looks great!! 3) I had to ease the backs of the ipe boards with a 1/4" radius router bit where the fastener attached. (the ipe comes with a 1/8" radius edge, not enough for correct installation) 4) most of the SS screws for this are # 8. If you are screwing into another hardwood (Ipe, Garapa, etc) I think the correct drill size is 9/64" . I broke a screw very early using the recommended 8/64" Here is a pic of a few weeks ago (I am doing most of this myself):

If you saved your clippings as private, those seem to be really gone, or at least really gone as of this time. However, you can still try to save your public clippings. Go to google and type in your user name and "clippings". Within the first few entries should be clippings by "your name here". You don't click on the blue title, or the green link under that. You click on the tiny arrow next to the green link, and a "cached" box will pop up. Click on that, and you will find your cached clippings. This can be nice if you saved some that were really long and are now cut off. You can also do this to retrieve you cached exchange list too- just type in "exchange list" instead of clippings. Hope this helps :)

Well, that's awful about them not responding, but if you can sign in with your Gardenweb ID, you should be able to get your clippings.

Hover your mouse over the "Your Houzz" in the upper right corner here in the forum and click on Your Houzz on the drop down menu. It'll take you to your dashboard. Right under the banner in the middle is a menu -- click on "Bookmarks" then scroll down to "Discussions You Bookmarked" and "Discussion Comments You Bookmarked". Those are your clippings from GW. The first is if you clipped a whole thread it'll take you to the top, and the second is if you clipped a post in the middle of the thread it'll take you to that point.

If you can't sign in on your Gardenweb ID, do ask Tamara. Someone in the powers that be should be able to help you get back in.

Thank you plllog, I just came back to report I'd found mine right where you said. I'd looked the other day and didn't seem to find the old ones, but today they are there, so I must have looked someplace different before. Yay. I did have to google for a recipe on GW I wanted to be sure to save someplace else since I couldn't find it on Houzz, and was able to do that, too.

Well they finally responded. They said if they're not under the bookmarks, then they are gone....so, they are gone. A head's up would've been nice so I could've printed them before they disappeared. GRRRRRRR.

I followed plllog's instructions and mine are gone. As I said in a prior thread on this topic, I had all of canarybird's photography lessons in my clippings. Some things I could care less about, but I did not want to lose those lessons!!

I hope you don't mind momj47, that I grabbed them too.

Things like this are why I'm leery of sites offering "cloud storage solutions". Whatever promises and assurances they make, anything stored in the cloud, (aka on someone else's computer) can disappear at any time, perhaps without any notice.

Barb! thanks a million. I've now got them all saved on my computer. I haven't re-looked through them, but my recollection is that they were very well-written and beautifully illustrated.

If there's something in particular that you remember from your clippings, it might be findable with Google or Houzz search. For years, I was looking for one particular post, and I searched everywhere, including the Wayback machine, but it was just nowhere to be found, but right after the move to Houzz, I gave it a try on the Houzz search and it wasn't hard to find at all.

I'd be happy to help, but would need to know the name of the forum, and any specific, unique words that you know are in the thread. I found mine because I knew one of the other posters' screen name, which was distinctive, along with some other keywords. I think perhaps there were archives that weren't searchable on GW, that were revived on Houzz--if so, that would explain why I couldn't find it before. The internet never forgets.

Individual computers do, however, so do pay attention to Bob's point. If you really want it, download it, and make hard copy too. Paper is amazingly durable.

An easy Google for the food photo lessons: Part 1 -- Lighting, for example.
