Adding a new section of Garden in my grassy yard :) Cardboard?

Nicole J

Hi there, any ideas on what to do? We have a section of yard that I want to add for garden space. This year we tilled it up (the grassy section) and pulled grass/weeds. I attempted growing cucs but nothing happened other than a few vines (I only found one small cucumber after pulling them a few weeks ago. lol) I heard that you can dig down a foot or two, but I was thinking, what about putting down cardboard/newspapers over the fall/winter and hopefully that will kill off everything by the time it thaws in spring? I live in South Dakota and it gets super cold here. Any ideas, or am I doing this all wrong? :) THanks for your help!
