Tinted Primer question
Comments (7)Hey Ummm, A good shade of gray is a "pencil-lead" gray. Not too dark, not too light. * If you're near an ACE store, ask if they have the ACE Tintable latex primer, SKU# 1969393 (gallon). * I like the formula B=4Y, and KX=2Y into a gallon. * If C2 primer, use the ACS Interior latex primer C-2085 gallon, with formula BK=36 & WH=5Y. * Note this formula is almost a reverse of the ACE. C2 colorants are very saturated, but the ACE-base starts out with more white. The C2 ACS-primer is fairly clear b4 colorant. TIMELINE: I wouldn't let the primer go past a week. They can get too dried-out to hold the paint as good as they could. * Minimize the "days-between" priming & paint. * Allow ~5 or more hours between paint-coats though. All the colorant in these colors takes double the time to dry enough to recoat. * Recoat too soon, & the first coat can get pulled off by the 2nd! Later, Faron...See MoreDo I need a primer? Comments (4)No primer is needed. The power wash will prep the aged surfaces for paint and Aura will definitely adhere to it. The cracked paint over wood should be sanded smooth and filled with MD Heavy Patch, then sanded smooth when dry. The stucco cracks should be filled level with an elastomeric caulk. Dynaflex is one example. Prime the patched areas with the aura paint. Be sure to feathersand the chipped areas removed by scraper. If it's left with an edge, the paint will eventually crack there in less than a year. Gutters and downspouts usually match the trim colors. It's important to inspect the condition of the facia board behind the gutters. There may be rotting wood behind there....See MorePrimer question....need answer ASAP. Thanks!
Comments (7)paintguy.....thanks for the speedy reply. My husband is heading over to paint at our new house right now. Thanks for the explanation too. Just curious though....I don't know all of the acronyms you experienced people use.....what does PVA stand for? (Don't laugh!) :-) volvo 85.....I would think your painter is correct when he says you don't need a primer. Even though the paint is old, if the walls have been painted before, I don't think you need a primer unless you've done a lot of patching and have new drywall mud. But the pros here will hopefully give you a better answer. You may, however, need 2 coats, depending on what paint you use and how it covers....See MoreFaron79 , Others - Primer question
Comments (3)Thanks Faron. The top coat over the scratch/brown coat on the house is an elasomeric coating vs. the old traditional stucco top coat. In our area of build, 4500' in the sierras, it's important to have a top coat that expands/contracts with temp changes. The problem is that they put on the wrong color, (supplier fault), and the plasterers cant get back to it until around may. After they re-top coat, we'll paint the windows, which is the area of concern them being primered only. I am glad to hear that you wasn't going to advise to completely re-strip the primers on the windows down to bare wood and go from there. Thanks for the advise to sand, wash, re-prime and top coat immediately. Good article on priming, Thanks again!...See More- 8 years ago
