If you can open the recycle bin and right click the file.. can you do that ? If so, Un-Delete it. I've from control panel, users .. deleted user accounts in win8 and they seem to disappear completely easy enough. So maybe that file is bigger problem than it seems. You can certainly try to use Control Panels 'Programs & Features' icon to uninstall QuckBooks .. and if that works, see if that file goes away. But try to undelete it first may be necessary now. You may need to login windows to the account that won't delete, and from Control Panel 'Folders' options, put everything on Show Hidden files. Then open your C drive while in that account, and double click the $Recycle.bin and then the folder inside it.. try to delete the file there - if it wont delete,,,, try to delete the folder it is in.. and no luck,,, maybe delete the actual $Recycle.bin if you cant get rid of this mystery file. You can try also starting the computer in Safe Mode and try deleting that file too the various different ways I've suggested. This post was edited by mikie on Thu, Jan 17, 13 at 13:55

Owbist, thanks I do like the fast boot on W8 - even with the switch to Desk Top, which to my simple needs is like being back in W7, it is a much shorter wait to start browsing or getting email. Mikie, not sure I "know and love" playing with the BIOS, but in the past I have had occasions to need to. Mostly that goes back to W95 days. Or even the 3.x whatever was before '95. You seem to be suggesting a 3rd party recovery tool. As I noted Gateway provides a tool to image the HDD as well as restore to factory fresh - as I have already uninstalled Norton I assume that would be Factory Fresh less Norton which is fine with me. What I miss was W7 had a DVD boot capability and Toshiba provided me with the tools to create a repair DVD, separate from a restore DVD... I liked that, it prevented me form doing damage by clicking on the wrong button. I suppose the Gateway restore doesn't proved direct access to F8. I do recall tapping F8 during a boot in XP and earlier to get into the BIOS..you seem to be saying (to my reading) that W8 doesn't let one get to the BIOS until the password is satisfied. I don't know if that is different in W7, I have never gone to the BIOS in my W7 machines. I have had to boot the Toshiba notebook off of the Repair DVD a couple of times and it saved my "bacon". On Password, in W7 I could easily change or remove the password.. that seems to be buried deeper in W8. Is it even possible to run W8 without an administrative password protected logon? My giant 17.3" Gateway will likely not be taken out of the house, a password isn't needed - well if a crook breaks into my house it would be better if I has some protection on all computers... problem is W8 ended up with a very complicated password that resulted from my initial start up of the machine..as I recall it had something to do with a password for my Microsoft account, and being external I wanted a secure PW, in fact MS may have required it.

This gets more interesting with each post. I was fairly knowledgeable about electronics in the days of vacuum tubes. I had envisioned a case where, if necessary, capacitors could be replaced by removing the old one and extending leads to remote mount a new one if the new one did not match the physical size of the original. The tech was going to install a new, different motherboard which in turn, he said, would require a new processor. I do know that failed capacitors that are bulged are typically shorted and if failed with no visual indication, they are open. These are said to be bulging. I do not know how to identify the motherboard, but did find a large board MSI NX6200TC-TD64ES which an online search identifies as video graphics card- new ones of that number are available. I am feeling better about reviving my old machine. And if so, it probably will be used offline almost all of the time. Please give me all the additional information you think is significant.

Corrine they fixed it right away, the day we were discussing it I did go with firefox and right up at the top a banner opened which was one that looked like it could be the download for malwarebytes. I know the actual download button is the blue one but for some it could have been confusing.(And I do have adblock plus and easylist) But I have to say it was not there long, it was not there when I originally posted the link but shortly after apparently it appeared, I was able to see it only once then it was completely gone. I know the bleepingcomputer team would not willingly want that kind of confusion and they apparently took care of it. Bleeping computer is so huge I know it has to be a big cost and also a lot of work to make sure everything is as it should be!
