My Wandering Jew has something that resembles mold or fungus on soil.

My Wandering Jew plant (about 5 months old) is getting a layer of what looks like light grey mold on top of the soil, more in some places than others. It has been outside all summer and was brought into the house about a week ago. I thought maybe this change could have brought it on, but then again, I may have just not noticed it as she is very voluptuous and the roots weren't very visible. I also noticed in just 2 or 3 spots, new growth has turned dark brown and "soggy" looking, definitely dead. Because of another sweep of sunshine, she is sitting outside to soak up the last bits of rays and warm weather. I have rooted many cuttings from her and none of those plants have this same "mold". I thought possible overwatering but I only water it about every 2-3 days. Please help!!! I don't want her to be sad.

Comments (81)I filled three new whiskey barrels with the "organic" raised bed and planter mix last year - first time I've ever used any Kellogs product. Didn't really like the look of it (I worked 12 years for a greenhouse and was used to the lovely commercial mix we used there)... I sure wish I'd seen this thread first!! I've grown in barrels with nice success over the years, but NOTHING I planted in that soil did well. Carrots never grew beyond 2" tall, no taproot to speak of. One healthy, stocky bush tomato plant produced ONE tomato and died. (A cherry tomato did semi-ok, but they're half a weed anyway.) Three different dwarf/bush type squash plants, and only one female bloom the whole season. Green beans failed to yield, I picked enough for one meal for two people. Container variety of corn got about 2' tall, and tasseled weeks before any ears appeared. Swiss chard, planted in the fall, got about 4" tall and stalled. Nasturtiums, bought in 3" pots, just stalled and never bloomed. Even my marigolds stayed tiny. The only thing that flourished was some chocolate mint, and after reading this thread I think I'll just pull it up and start again with some other kind of soil!! I'm going to be pulling all the Kellogs junk out of my barrels this spring and using it as fill dirt where I don't plan to plant anything important. Comments (11)Right, Christine, Tradescantia zebrina. It DOES look good. "So your recommendation is, don't add anything in it, not even water for about a month and see how it goes?" Not really, just to let it get fairly dry before adding more water. That could be tomorrow or next month, and not particular advice to this plant, just to any plant in store-bought potting soil, especially during the cooler, shorter days of winter. Monet, it could be salt buildup, just looks kind of fuzzy. You raise a good point about allowing water to drip out though, not sit in the saucer, to help avoid that situation. Sitting by a cool window and/or blasts of hot dry air can be difficult for plants. Something to consider if they start looking poorly. Stirring things up with a fork might be a little drastic at this point, possibly causing more harm to roots than good from adding a little air. This plant looks fine. If you get the gut feeling to do something like that in the future, a skewer might be less dangerous, kind of stick it in, pry up slightly, maybe a little wiggle. If your plant is drying out in a reasonable amount of time, and looking fine, I wouldn't engage in such unorthodox measures. It's good that you're not afraid to 'get in there' though. At some point it'll be a good idea to remove the old soil from the pot and around the roots and replace it with new. Trimming a few roots at that time, if they are really long and/or curled around the pot, would be a good idea. When days are longer & warmer, it's easier for plants to recover so this is most often done in late spring/early summer, before it gets too hot....See MoreMycorrhizal fungus for roses
Comments (63)I posted on this thread in 2015... I have been using it for some time, and experimenting for at least 7 years I would say.. I have drawn a conclusion that it is a total waste of money and completely unnecessary. I don't even use it now to alleviate possible rose replant sickness which we get here a lot. Roses cost enough as they are, so we should ask ourselves if we need to add to that expense in this way. Remember too, that it's now big business running the show. I'm not sure why we should ''trust these folks'' when you realise that Mycorrhizal Applications is now a wholly owned subsidiary of Valent BioSciences, whose parent company is Sumitomo Chemical Co. Big agricultural concerns going on there. I liken it to the Pharmaceutical industry telling everybody they need this pill and that pill, when for the most part, we probably don't need any.. I noticed they closed a gap in the market just recently. There was no product for Rhododendrons and Azaleas, as the one out there was for roses. So now I notice - guess what - a mycorrhizal formula for Rhododendrons, all in a nice little sachet and costing equivalent of about 10 dollars or somesuch. I mean really, if you have acid soil who needs it?.. If it makes the gardener feel good, and that's what it's all aimed at I think, people will lap it up, especially if they are encouraged to do so, as we are here by well known writers, gardeners, even the RHS. … they've all been taken in by it... now, you can hardly put anything in the ground without being advised to sprinkle some of this stuff around the roots.. They like to give the impression they are ahead of the game. Well, I'm also ahead of the game - in reverse. Comments (11)first.. NEVER USE A CHEMICAL UNTIL YOU ID THE PROBLEM.. AND VERIFY THAT THE CHEMICAL IS RATED FOR THE PROBLEM... its a waste of money .. and dangerous ... second... why destroy part of mother natures garden show.... that was a free plant... you should have reveled in it .. for its own beauty ... is a plant only good for your garden.. if you pay for it???? it is either there because of your watering techniques or the mulch ... if in fact it is a slime mold .... research the slime mold.. and find out why its there.. if it is too much water ... or improper drainage ... then all you need do is to change how you water.. to make it not reappear ... in other words.. there never was a need for the chemicals ... please ... learn to enjoy a 'free' plant in your garden ... mushrooms are my favorite .... growwing on some long dead tree root.. pop up here or there... i used to be like you .... running out and getting rid of them because they interfered with my garden .. then i took a zen attitude about it all .. and come to find out.. they are cool ... and that is what i would think about the slime mold... did you actually get down on your belly and study it ... its probably really cool ... good luck ken...See More

2 years agoHello, anyone can advise me please, is this the root got the fungus? My wondering jew I keep the roots to propagate in water, it looks like this! I am worried! Also, my plant's leaves are dull and weak type! I live in Halifax, Canada. Weather is hot, humid, cold at night, mixed type but full of sun.
